Koffee With Karan – Directors’ special!

There was an earlier directors’ episode with Raju Hirani, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra and Kunal Kohli. That one had people mostly preening and self-promoting (except Hirani – who seems too nice to do that). So I was not expecting much from this episode. I did not get much either, but this was still a bit of an eye-opener.

What is the Dhak Dhak girl doing now? Madhuri on KBC!

Kashyap to make his most expensive film

Anurag Kashyap is all set to make the most expensive film of his career, which will go on floors on December 3. Kashyap, Sunil Bohra and Studio 18 will co-produce the film. But here’s the most interesting bit: though the film, tentatively titled Gangs of Wasseypur, will have no A-list stars, its budget will be nothing less than a whopping Rs 45 crore, approximately.
In fact, Manoj Bajpai and Raima Sen are the only well-known actors in the film. When contacted, Anurag Kashyap said, “It’s a stylised action plot, in which a revenge drama is spread over three decades.Everyone is aware that Manoj and I are working together after Satya in this film. We are going to shoot for the next three and a half months in UP, Bihar and Orissa.”
That does not include any locations outside of India. Then why the big budget? When quizzed about it, Kashyap said, “Yes, it is an expensive film and I have never worked on such a big budget before.

Break ke Baad reviews 2.5 stars so far

LA Times Indian romcom has engaging performances. Too bad the script
doesn't live up to them.
"Break Ke Baad"
Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone star in the Indian romcom "Break Ke Baad."                  (Reliance Big Pictures)
Komal Nahta, RadioSargam 2/5 Break Ke Baad is for the youth in the cities; its
reasonable price is an asset.
Nikhat Kazmi, TOI 3/5 Nothing dramatic, just fresh: Break Ke Baad is the other
flavour of romance. One that you don't find in run-of-the mill Mills and Boon.
Blessy Chettiar, DNA2/5 If you don’t fall in the 20-30 age bracket, the events
unfolding in front of your eyes on the screen might leave you asking: ‘what the
hell is happening here?’
Sarita Tanwar, Mid-Day2.5/5 When you attempt a romantic comedy, you need to

abide by two rules -- it needs to have the freshness quotient and a twist in the tale
....Watch it only if you are addicted to romcoms.
Anupama Chopra, NDTV 2.75/5
.. shows promise and sparkle but eventually doesn't deliver the goods.
Rajeev Masand, IBN  2.5/5 As romantic comedies go "Break Ke Baad", starring
Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone, is arguably more engaging than recent films
of this genre - "Aisha", "Anjaana Anjaani" and "Jhootha Hi Sahi".
Sukanya Varma, Rediff 2.5/5 Call it tribute or inspiration, the prospect of zero
individuality in a creative medium is hardly a deal breaker. And it's definitely not cool
anymore.

The Box-Office Prospects of Guzaarish are Grim

Sanjay Leela Bhasali’s 2010 Magnum Opus Guzaarish released last week.

The movie has a total cost of anything between 65-80 cr going by all the sources. This kind of cost was always going to be a uphill task for any movie, leave alone a movie like Guzaarish which doesnt boast of a proper commerical setting.

The movie opened in the overseas markets to a lukewarm to decent response and has the following approximate numbers.

USA = 420 K Dollars first weekend.
UAE = 355 K Dollars first weekend.
UK = 250 K Dollars first weekend.(155 K pounds).
Around the world will add another 150-200 K max.

Which gives an opening weekend of around 1.2 Million Dollars to Guzaarish which in no way justifies its costs.

At this rate the movie will end its overseas run around ~2 million dollars(~9 cr) and give a share of around 4 cr.

Domestically, the movie had a opening weekend of around 14.5-15 cr nett. Now unless the movie remains very steady from monday onwards at a industry standard rate movie should have 22-23 cr first week and total nett ending around 32-34 cr.

Now given that starting next week there will be another slew of movies at a regular pace week after week and that even if the movie does remain steady,it will be on the lower side only at the maximum, given that the jumps in saturday and sunday till now dont show any significant chances of a long term run here, though it should be added that the movie did not have any crash on sat or sun, but that could be attributed to the fact that it didnt start with a bang anyways.

So the domestic final nett can range from anywhere between 32-40 cr giving a share of around 16-20 cr.

Given these kind of boxoffice numbers, the max a movie can get from other sources is 20 cr(TV/DVD/Music).

Thus the total revenue generated by Guzaarish comes to around,

Indian = 16-20 cr, more likely to end around 16-18 cr.
Overseas = 4 cr.
Other = 20 cr.
Total = 40-44 cr.
So, how much the movie helps the leads/director in the long term or how much acclaim it sees on TV/DVD is yet to be seen but as for now the movie is sure to be a loser on the Boxoffice front, with losses ranging from anywhere from 25-35 crores.

Let us have Ranbir for coffee - the Deepika Padukone & Sonam Kapoor episode of KWK

KWK had been plodding along this season, starting with a mind-numbingly dull episode and barely warming up a bit with the Ranbir Kapoor Imran Khan episode. And then came the two women, little less than three years old in the industry, but ready to speak their minds about a lot of issues! Suddenly KWK got jolted out of the doldrums and into the realm of funny and interesting. I think the show was not at all what the host had envisioned and he was often caught off guard with some of the candid answers.
They say hell hath no fury greater than that of a woman scorned. And here were two women who showed their claws when it came to many issues.

Rani in Kareena out of Aamir's next? Updates included!

Rani Mukerji and Aamir Khan
Rani Mukerji and Aamir Khan Mo

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/news-interviews/Rani-teams-up-with-Aamir-again/articleshow/6969818.cms#ixzz162UFO6YG
Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji are back — five years after they shared little screen space in that box office dud Mangal Pandey and 12 years since their blockbuster Ghulam

Several attempts to get the two superstars on board all these years had been made, but failed. Now the long wait comes to an end with Rani teaming up with Aamir for Reema Kagti's forthcoming film in which he plays a cop. The sizzling 3 Idiots jodi of Aamir-Kareena is also making a comeback in this film.

Rani's inclusion is interesting. Bollywood was under the impression that the actress, who was delivering back-to-back hits with Shah Rukh Khan, would never be able to land an Aamir (SRK's biggest industry competitor) movie again. But strangely, Rani is not so chummy with SRK anymore because she is thick with his foe — Salman K

SLB se meri Guzaarish!

I am a fan of his films, I admit it. I saw Khamoshi 2 years ago and found it mesmerizing right from the moment that Seema Biswas got close to the speaker and the LOUD music came on. AND I finally understood why Salman could create mass hysteria. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a musical feast full of rioting colors and Aishwarya and Salman had a crackling chemistry.

Guzaarish reviews start coming in! 2.6 stars so far

Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama 4 stars  On the whole, GUZAARISH is an invigorating tale. Bhansali, as a film-maker, has scaled several notches above his past accomplishments to create a near-perfect cinematic experience
Nikhat Kazmi, Times of India  4 stars  A film like Guzaarish isn't made for the box office. It's made for the gratification of the senses. And that it does, in ample measure.
Subhash K Jha, BWHungama  no rating  During a year when cacophonic crassness masquerading as comic entertainment has been sanctioned by critics and the masses, Guzaarish comes along to remind us that excellence of the highest order is alive and throbbing in our cinema.
Renuka Rao - DNA India 3 stars  Guzaarish is poignant but hardly phenomenal
Kunal Guha - Yahoo movies 1 star A song in the film Guzaarish warns you about the film. It goes something like, "Sau gram zindagi hain..." so think twice before wasting some of it watching this film.
SIFY review 2.5 stars hansali’s love story doesn’t move you the way it is intended to. It’s unique, but not necessarily special. That pretty much sums up the film as well.
Aniruddha Guha, DNA India 2 stars The flaws are many. The acting seems right out of an ’80’s hamfest.
Raja Sen Rediff 2.5 stars - Hrithik Impresses, Bhansali doesn't!
BigOye 3 stars The film is a splendid drama, but fails to excite the audience. If you are a patron of Bhansali's art work, go for it!
Anupama Chopra NDTV 3 stars (well 2.75 actually!!) This fantasy would be effective if the writing was more organic and the emotions felt more authentic but Bhansali never gives us a chance to invest in these people.
Pankaj Sabnani, Glamsham 3.5 stars  GUZAARISH is poignant, amazing and simply 'magical'. A sincere 'guzaarish', please go watch it.
Komal Nahta 1.5 stars On the whole, Guzaarish is a beautiful film for the classes but will face rejection among the masses.
Rajeev Masand, CNN IBN 2 stars Guzaarish is beautifully shot and has a larger-than-life operatic feel to it. But it’s also shamelessly manipulative. It’s hard to care for Bhansali’s characters because the emotions never feel real.
Namrata Joshi UNRATED! I will see Three Colours Blue. Asap. Just so I can get back to appreciating the use of colour palette in a film.
Sukanya Varma, Filmfare no rating Guzaarish is not the storm he may have intended it to be, but it is that little spell of rain that invades your life for a bit. But just for that bit…
Khalid Mohd. PFC 2 stars Overloaded with English dialogue, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish, never quite comes to grips with its theme of mercy killing. Or emotional healing.
Gautam Chintamani, BUZZ 2 stars What matter is living life to the fullest even it’s just 100 grams! All in all Guzaarish isn’t all that bad but then it’s not worth dying for.
Shubhra Gupta, Indian Express 2 stars Guzaarish is a pretty picture with precious little magic: Bhansali needs to recharge his wand.
Vinod Mirani, Indian Television no rating Yes, this also another pretentious Hindi film in English in most parts.
Read more: ‘Guzaarish’ Review By Komal Nahta | Koimoi.com

Baradwaj Rangan, Blogical Conclusion 3 stars The last scene, the last image actually, is over-the-top ludicrous – but perhaps it’s because the film can never decide on which side of the good-taste divide it wants to fully settle into.
Mayank Shekhar, Hindustan Times 3 stars  Let’s not hear any more rubbish on this movie not being a direct inspiration. Bhansali’s Guzaarish is as much The Sea Inside as his Black was Arthur Penn's The Miracle Worker (1962). A whole lot. And yet, not wholly.
Shubhra Gupta, India Today 2 stars How fake can a movie get? Well, you know when the heroine flounces around in Victorian costumes, when the hero sings "It's a Wonderful Life" (ruined the song for me for life) and when the understudy dresses like Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker.

Dhobi Ghat theatrical trailer

Your Higness Trailer

Today iTunes announced release of BEATLES tracks - my take on this remastering

What could 3 men (plus one., Ringo Starr joined the band in 1962), not quite 20 years old, do in 9 years of coming together and being together? You know it ain’t easy, you know how hard it can be – but that only holds true for mere mortals!

The Fab four were barely together for 9 years and created love and magic and mystery, and then parted just like that, never to come together again. By 1970 the Beatles were history and at that time Lennon was nearing 30, while McCartney and Harrison were still 28 and 29 years old. At an age when life begins for most young people, this group had already been there, done that, and influenced an entire generation all over the world, while leaving a legacy for many future generations.

Sabyasaachi talks about the styling of Guzaarish!

Sabyasachi Mukherjee
How was it working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the second time after six years (Black)?
I have to tell you, in spite of the fact that both Sanjay and me are such intense people, it was great. I enjoy working with him because he is so methodical and organised. While the rest of the directors are still finding out what to do with their scripts, Sanjay is ready and bound with his script months in advance, everything broken down scene by scene. Sanjay knows exactly what he wants with his set, light and costume. Unless you do that, it is impossible to make a great visual film. You cannot make a visually stunning film unless the director of photography (Sudeep Chatterjee), art director (Sumit Basu) and costume director are in sync.
And in this case there was the great Bong connection ‘in sync’…
Yes. We three Bengalis were on the same page, sharing similar sensibilities.

Khele Hum Jee Jaan Sey - updated with new Bande Mataram promo

The Music of Tees Maar Khan – some quick thoughts!

Farah Khan teams up with Akshay Kumar, in a Shirish Kunder script with music by Vishal Shekhar (and Shirish Kunder). The curiosity level is sky-high! After two back to back big hits that both had chart-buster type music, Farah chose to branch out on her own and produce and direct a film for her own production house – and to do it without her regular star, Shahrukh Khan. Tees Maar Khan was written by Shirish and with Akshay Kumar in mind. We were told that Sheila ki Jawaani a blockbuster gift from Farah to Katrina Kaif and it will be the Mother of all Item songs, leaving Munni Badnaam Hui biting the dust in its wake.
So what does the music of Tees Maar Khan offer?
The title track has Sonu Niigaam singing in 54 different voices (including an Akshay Kumar impression) and accents (including a faux Chinese one!). This track is composed by Shirish Kunder. There is an opening musical interlude that reminds one of the track sung by Ashanti in Bride and Prejudice and this is no doubt the “hook” that will be the Tees Maar Khan theme.

Rockmelt Browser comes to Rock the Internet Age!

I am not a big Facebook/Twitter user, don't have an account on the later(just the website auto account) and barely maintain an account on the former, but just last week the beta version of the latest new entry in the ever increasing and competitive market of Internet Browsers happened - Rockmelt. It was available as an self-invite to FB users.

It can be found here, www.rockmelt.com

What holds instant attention is the fact that its coming from the same core family of people which gave us the first big internet browser - Netscape Navigator.(whose code source went open later, to be what today we have as the highly independent and successful Mozilla Firefox).

The Browser is totally targeted at the youth of today, who are neck deep into social networking, be it laptop, ipad, desktop, ipod touch or any other kind of mobile decive, the need to be connected to your set of acquaintances is more than ever now.Rockmelt just nails it here.

Now this is not the first time something like this has been attemped, couple years back a browser named "Flock" did come with features integrating some of Facebook and Twitter into the browser, but it was deemed to ahead of its time(though its latest release and update has met with great applause).

Rockmelt is based on Chromium core(the same one Google Chrome is based on).

1. When you first start the browser it tries to contact FB,

Why Vipul Shah should stop making films ASAP!

After giving us Waqt (I still shudder at the memory), Namastey London (Katrina Kaif speaking out of a snorkel), London Dreams (Ajay the star”rocking” London), he throws at us his most recent offering – Action Replayy. I will not debate the issue of heavy “inspiration” from Back To The Future, because thinking of these two films together is nothing short of sacrilege. Nor will I debate the logic of the Time-machine in the living room, the motherless boy and fatherless girl, and the young guy with the Afro. To do that would require deep thoughts, and Jack Handey is on vacation today. Does Vipul know the basics of film-making?

Tron - theatrical trailer ( updated with Theatrical Trailer #3)

Is Tees Maar Khan an "inspired" version of a Peter Sellers' film?

Tees Maar Khan copy of Peter Sellers' After The Fox? Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Bollywood Hungama News Network,

Tees Maar Khan
How many of you have heard about the most famous Hollywood comedian (after Charlie Chaplin of course) Peter Sellers? If not, please watch his movie The Party. Anyway, the point to bring up a man of such repertoire is because his films are still inspiring a lot of filmmakers from Bollywood. Peter Sellers 1966 Italian film After The Fox (Caccia Alla Volpe) is one such example. Yes, you heard it.

But the word 'inspiration' is too cliche. It's 'similarities' that count when our filmmakers get inspired. After a bit of research, we found out that one of the most anticipated films of this year,Tees Maar Khan, is a fully inspired version of the 1966 comedy, After The Fox starring Peter Sellers. And after watching the trailer, here are some of the 'similarities' evident between both the films:

Peter Sellers plays Aldo Vanucci (aka the Fox), one of the greatest criminals of the world, and master of disguise. After Aldo escapes from the Italian prison he was held in, he meets again with his friends, and plans to retrieve the "gold of Cairo" a large shipment of gold, that waits to be unloaded somewhere in Italy. Aldo devices the perfect plan. Posing as a famous director, he finds the ideal coastal village to unload the shipment, and persuades the entire population that he has chosen their village as the set for his new movie.

Review of Reviewers

They’re so busy panning films and filmmakers that they never consider what the objects of their easy scorn make of their opinion. No easy star ratings for them either

'RGV Ki Aag' was that rare time that all Bollywood critics were on the same page. (Illustration: VIVEK THAKKAR)
'RGV Ki Aag' was that rare time that all Bollywood critics were on the same page. (Illustration: VIVEK THAKKAR)
Towards the end of November 2004, an Indian blog pointed out that a film critic of The Times of India had lifted direct sentences while reviewing the animation film Shark Tales. To the blogger it was plagiarism, but in truth the reviewer had made it clear that they were not her lines. But instead of naming the person—a reputed American film critic of Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert—whose sentences she lifted, she turned one person into many. ‘Critics say…’ she wrote, before repeating entire sentences and opinions of Ebert. It remains a puzzling affair. Why would anyone use another’s opinion in one’s opinion piece? Either the reviewer had not seen the movie or had no opinion of her own, which in her chosen profession can be a little bit of a disadvantage. Ironically, other than a few murmurs on the web, it did not make any difference to the reviewer, newspaper or film industry.

Golmaal 3 VS Action Replayy BO Thread

Huge 35 crore weekend for Golmaal 3,Low 17 crore Weekend for Action Replayy

Golmaal 3 continued its domination on Sunday at the box office over Action Replayy. Golmaal 3 looks set to record huge collections on Sunday again. The Mumbai circuit is likely to be a humungous 15 crore nett plus for the weekend. Gujarat is on a record breaking spree with higher collections than Dabangg.

Action Replay flattered to deceive as it showed a big jump on Saturday due to the holiday but collections were down on Sunday at most multiplexes compared to Saturday. The Sunday collections are likely to come in lower than Saturday whereas the film needed another big jump to get near the 20 crore nett mark which would have been an okay weekend collection.

The collections available for Sunday are suggesting a 35 crore nett weekend for Golmaal 3 and 17 crore nett for Action Replayy.

Farah Khan/SRK rift updated

Here is what SRK had to say about the whole thing.. in Feb '10 issue of Cineblitz:

Thank God Columbus Lost His Way

Ours is a love-hate relationship with America: its democracy, culture, universities hold us in thrall; its bullying repels us.

Whenever an American president wings his way to India, we always seem to get entangled in a bewildering variety of contradictory, confusing emotions. There’s jubilation at the chance to host the most powerful man of the world, to show him the wonder that’s India. Every word of his is decoded, every movement dissected. Underlying this excitement, though, persist the fears we have harboured over decades. Can’t we fathom the surreptitious American agenda, some ask. No matter how liberal a president of the United States may be, his principal goal is to dominate the world, conquer markets, and enrich his own citizens, they claim. Such warnings emanate from, and stoke, a vague anxiety about the future.

This emotional confusion about America, though, has become less acute over the years, largely because of the psychotherapeutic impact of cataclysmic changes around the globe. For instance, the end of the cold war and the disintegration of the Soviet Union into fragments have treated our paranoid propensity to see the spectre of cia behind developments not to our liking. And the ensuing withering of the non-aligned movement has removed the immobilising effect of having to constantly walk the tightrope between Moscow and Washington. This also seems to have resolved the contradiction in the hearts of those Indians who subscribed to a broad leftism but found the pull of the ‘elitist’ lifestyle of India, neither capitalist nor socialist, simply irresistible.

Baradwaj Rangan writes an ode to Guzaarish music!

Between Reviews: Songs of the Soul

In Between ReviewsCinema: HindiMusic: Indian FilmMusic: Review (Hindi Film) on November 6, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Long, meandering thoughts inspired by the long, meandering melody lines in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s remarkably expressive score for ‘Guzaarish,’ his latest ode to the opera.
Hosted by imgur.com
NOV 7, 2010 – METRE IS TO MUSIC what iron bars are to a lioness in captivity – it calms us with the illusion that the untamable has been tamed. Without this rhythmic symmetry, we are no longer in charge. The music is in charge, the music controls us – much like how free verse mandates that we bend to its idiosyncratic will in ways that formally fashioned poetry doesn’t. When music is compacted into neat measures, we can afford to relegate it to the background as we cook and do the laundry and drive to work with the corner of an eye on the latest incoming text message. We can even hum along. Pop music – whose mission is to be contemporary and catchy – thrives on metrical precision, and because most Indian pop music is really film music, our songs are almost always constructed like pop songs, with short musical phrases, with intentional repeats at regular intervals, and with the metre exposed through pulsating percussion. One-two-three-FOUR, one-two-three-FOUR our internal metronome goes, and our feet pick up these subconscious signals and tap along in sweet submission.

Copied or merely similar? You be the judge (Let us know what you think!)

Here is the Tees Maar Khan title track:

And here is what I think the inspiration was:

You be the judge!

(the trail to Ashanti's Bride and Prejudice song was provided by Baba)
