MNIK Box office reports

Seat-edger start for `My Name is Khan' in Mumbai
Varada Bhat
Mumbai, Feb. 12

The opening day screening of My Name is Khan could be music to the ears of Fox Star Studios, which bought it for Rs 100 crore.

After a shaky start which only saw half of Mumbai's multiplexes screen the film, the latter part of Friday saw tickets virtually flying off the counters. The weekend could, therefore, see packed halls for the movie which has been in the eye of a political storm. Tickets are retailing at a 15 per cent premium.

Over 300 prints were released in Maharashtra, of which Mumbai got 65. The two centres are critical to any new Bollywood release's fortunes as they jointly contribute to over 25 per cent of box office collections.

Sources at Fox Star say it was tough to ascertain the opening day's collections as the film opened simultaneously in Egypt, West Asia, Germany, Poland, Australia, the UK and the US. Nearly 70 per cent of its collections are expected to come from overseas markets.

Indications from analysts are that the movie has grossed nearly Rs 2 crore in Australia, New Zealand and the UK and inching close to the Rs 8-crore mark in the domestic market.

For the record, Bollywood's largest grosser to date, 3 Idiots raked in Rs 20 crore on Day One and it remains to be seen if MNIK will do better.

"Despite the Mumbai release being affected on the first day, MNIK should have a record-breaking Friday in terms of box-office numbers," said Mr Taran Adarsh, a film trade analyst.

The film opened to big crowds in the country with almost every multiplex reporting 100 per cent collections. "The film has opened to a solid start," said Mr Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios.

It hit the screens amidst unprecedented security at movie halls.

On an average, 70-100 policemen were deployed across each property to keep in check potential violence from Shiv Sena protestors.

B.O. update: 'M.N.I.K.' opens to a deafening response!

Humungous -- that's the right word to describe the initial response to MY NAME IS KHAN. The film had a deafening start at practically every centre, with practically every multiplex generating 100% collections, while single screens in mass-dominated centres opened to a 70% - 80% response, which is very, very good.

At a major theatre in Delhi, the audiences heralded the arrival of the film with band-bajaa and by bursting crackers. Outside a theatre in Patna, a moviegoer distributed roses to cinegoers who had come to watch the film.

The reviews from critics who matter are already out [every reviewer has praised the film to the skies] and the audience feedback is overwhelming. In fact, at several places, there has been a mad scramble to book the tickets and the film is expected to set theatre, city and district records at most centres.

In Mumbai, the multiplexes had decided to open shows at one property each. Hence, the multiplexes didn't perform the morning shows, but commenced screening from 12 noon onwards. The screenings began at Fun Republic [Andheri], Inox [Nariman Point], PVR [Goregaon], Fame [Malad], Big [Wadala] and Cinemax [Kandivali]. The multiplexes have now started screening the film at other properties.

Despite the Mumbai release getting affected, the film should have a solid, record-breaking Friday, in terms of box-office numbers.

My Name Is Khan has a big opening in the US

Mumbai: A blast from the Arctic has been dumping heavy snow on New York but on Thursday Shah Rukh Khan was given a gift from the weather gods: a calm winter night for a screening of My Name Is Khan.
The ImaginAsian theatre in New York filled up quickly — even the US media which ignores Bollywood releases has been stirred over how the Shiv Sena has been bullying theatre owners in Mumbai into scotching Khan’s film.

The Shiv Sena’s skullduggery has made headlines in most US broadsheets including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. “I think the Shiv Sena is creating bad karma by being so mean-spirited,” said Linda Langly, who pays up to $12 a ticket to watch premieres of Bollywood movies with her Indian boyfriend.

Western markets, especially those with a fair sprinkling of South Asian diaspora like in the US and the UK, have become a major source of revenue for Indian films in recent years. MNIK producers will be hoping to offset any losses in Mumbai against the commercial success of the new release in North America.
Fox Star Studios is content with its distribution deal for filmmaker Karan Johar’s new release. Its plans of releasing as many as 500 prints of the film in more than 65 countries worldwide are unprecedented for a Bollywood project. In the US and Canada it opens in 121 theatres on Friday which is on the lavish end of what Bollywood films open on.
The Khan-Kajol film is likely to draw South Asians into theatres in droves over the Valentine’s Day long weekend from 13-15 February. Monday is a President’s Day holiday in the US so MNIK is likely to earn strong box-office receipts.
“Shah Rukh has an absolutely inbuilt audience with Non Resident Indians (NRIs). He has a very strong connect with them. I thought he was one of the best things about MNIK so I have no doubt that they will love the film. They will certainly check it out,” said Anupama Chopra, author of King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema.
“Bollywood is no longer the shabby, slightly embarrassing country cousin that NRI parents insist on bringing home. Hindi films are trendy. So is India,” Chopra whose life is half Mumbai, half Michigan soid.
According to Chopra, the meteoric rise of Shah Rukh could be read as a metaphor for a country changing at breakneck pace. “He is a Muslim superstar in a Hindu-majority country and his life reflects the fundamental paradoxes of a post-liberalisation nation attempting to thrive in a globalised world,” says Chopra.
While promoting MNIK in New York, Khan told the WSJ that he wanted his new film to be a cross between hit like Pedro Almodovar’s Life is Beautiful which was a foreign language film watched by the global masses.
“Will MNIK really connect with the US mainstream audience? I am not so sure,” said Chopra. Vibhuti Patel, contributing editor for Newsweek, gave the film high marks for grappling with a topical subject, but panned it as “far too long” for Western audiences. “I think it was a crossover between Forest Gump and Rainman. It didn’t have the song and dance. The film had autobiographical overtures for Shah Rukh,” said Patel.

  1. My Name Is Khan’ hits box office, earns Rs 40 cr in opening weekend !

New Delhi: Having managed to set the box office cash register ringing by generating close to Rs 40 crore in its opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) from India and abroad, Shahrukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan (MNIK) has managed to find place amongst the top grossing Bollywood films of recent times.

The few other films to have grossed in the same range as MNIK in the opening weekends include 3 Idiots, Ghajini and Love Aaj Kal, say film trade pundits. Trade pundits expect the movie to gross over Rs 100 crore before the first week run is over. Only other films to have managed to cross the milestone in recent past are 3 Idiots and Ghajini, both starring Aamir Khan.

“MNIK opened to packed houses across all major international centres just like it did within the country. Combining the initial collection figures from UK, US, Australia and other overseas centre, the film would have grossed over Rs 40 crore in the first-three days,” says a leading film distributor from Mumbai.

The much-awaited and controversial MNIK had to face stiff opposition from Shiv Sena workers who did not wanted the people to see the film in protest of a pro-Pakistani statement made by Shahrukh Khan last month after the IPL-3 auctions.

In India, the film was initially released across 1,300 screens.

Another 500-600 prints went to the overseas centre. Most multiplexes in the country like PVR, Inox, Fame, Big Cinemas, Cinemax and Fun Cinemas among others have witnessed 100% bookings for the weekend shows.

“The bookings for all evening shows on Monday and Tuesday for MNIK are also overwhelming. We may see full-house even in the coming weekdays going by the advance booking figures,” a senior executive in DT Cinemas in Gurgaon said.

  6. The box office picture is clearing up somewhat. here is what Taran has to say about the weekend in India:

Picked up rapidly over the weekend! .... The opening weekend closed at Rs. 33.20 cr. nett, which was confirmed by Fox to this writer. The Friday figures were approx. Rs. 8 cr., Saturday was Rs. 11.06 cr. and Sunday was a record-breaking Rs. 14.14 cr. [official figures supplied by Fox]. Mumbai, Delhi-U.P., Punjab, Bengal and South have performed exceedingly well, while C.P., C.I. and Rajashan aren’t that strong.

  7. Is Fox trying to outdo Sony ?

‘My Name Is Khan’ earns Rs 90 crore globally by weekend - Star Fox Studio

Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan (MNIK) has grossed around Rs 50 crore in India and about Rs 90 crore worldwide in its opening weekend, Vivek Krishnani, head (marketing ), Star Fox Studio said.

Krishnani observed, “In the US, the film made Rs 20 crore, in the UK region, £1,23,000 ( Rs 89.61 lakhs) on the opening day. In Australia, the film earned an impressive $1.5 million ( Rs 7.05 crore), and was ranked no. 11 in the market.” He added that the overall weekend collections of MNIK have been double of closest competitor 3 Idiots worldwide,” adding that Sunday global box office markets like US, Australia, UK and Middle East set new records for the biggest single day internationally for a Bollywood movie.

Star Fox Studio, the distributors of the film had distributed close 2,000 prints worldwide in the US, UK, Gulf region and Australia. The film ranked number five at the overseas box office behind Avatar, Valentine's Day, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and The Wolfman. MNIK has seen the biggest international opening day for a Bollywood film, grossing almost 30% more than, 3 Idiots which was released on December 24, 2009, says Krishnani.

In India, despite the issues in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Indore and other centres on Friday and part of Saturday, the film has opened well. In states where the film opened without any trouble, including Delhi-UP, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerela, the collections have been strong.

  8. My Name is Khan hot on 3 Idiots heels in US

Which is the biggest grosser among Bollywood films in the United States?

The record — at $ 6.5 million so far — is currently held by Raj Kumar Hirani's Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots. But Karan Johar’s Shahrukh Khan blockbuster My Name is Khan (MNIK) is rapidly catching up.

My Name Is Khan had a record-breaking opening weekend at the box office in North America, grossing nearly $1.94 million between Friday and Sunday, following its release on February 12. It didn’t show a drop in collection with the Sunday figure of $ 761,000 marking the highest one-day gross for any Hindi-language film in the territory. The film should easily cross the $ 2 million mark in its first week itself.

But can it keep going long enough to overhaul 3 Idiots?

“It will easily beat 3 Idiots,” said Shiraz Jiyani, owner of a six screen theatre at Lakewood, near Los Angeles. “It had surpassed 3 Idiots in advance bookings.”

The critical reception to 3 Idiots however, was considerably better than to MNIK. In the US, reviews matter.

“The repeat value of 3 Idiots is much higher,” said Shariq Hamid, who owns four cinemas in Texas. “The audience reaction to MINK has been mixed.”

However, Shah Rukh Khan films have always done well in the US. The record 3 Idiots broke was that of Om Shanti Om.

  9. MNIK is gone from indian boxoffice . its going to end at 55-60 crores max . kjo strikes again and giving a blow to Srk after KANK . all efforts of don , rabne , cdi , oso gone wasted with a poor boxoffice run of MNIK and so much time wasting .

btw i am banned from NG SB :(

  10. Neo is banned from Khitpit and doesnt show up on NG anymore, go do some work i will say ;)

On MNIK, you are bang on Right, though i will say 65-70 cr is possible but its a not going anywhere.

Overseas no doubt it will be big hit.

Tuesday saw huge falls again in Indore.

By the way i saw MNIK and also did my first review on it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thanks Neo - indeed the Indian box office situation is not very good at the moment. Unless this film does a Jodhaa Akbar and picks up every weekend, it will be an under-performer. We have to see how it does overseas - whether it has legs there or not.

I was watching HT news and saw Komal Nahata going on and on about the points not in favor of the film. While one can wonder about its entertainment quotient as it was a serious film, he said that it was of interest only to middle class Muslims. That seemed extremely biased and unreasonable given the secular nature of the country.

Similar mass bashing by trade happened at the time of CCTC and Saawariya also. I wonder if there is not another game afoot. These HW studios with deep pockets entering the BW market must have the BW big studios in a panic. They can get outbid and the game can change rapidly once any HW studio has a foothold in India. How can Big Pictures, YRF, UTV compete with FOX and Sony? If FOX makes any losses on 10 MNIK like films it will be like chicken feed for them whereas the fall of a few films nearly killed off Eros.

I hope you will comment on some of these issues.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Despite all the hungama and support of the English media, his colleagues and fans, SRK did lose goodwill after his misplaced statements wrt the Paki IPL players. No matter how much positive spin the English mainstream media in India puts on this event, for avg secular Indians who are tired of terrorism, this event really soured their opinions. The under performance of MNIK has to be taken in that context. India is not yet a leftist country that will gloss over issues such as the ones which came out flying after SRK commented. He may have spoken emotionally, and has every right to freedom of speech. But that speech also creates opinions. At the same time, Shiv Sena and their goons had no right to try to block MNIK, and they too will pay their price in the longrun.
Ultimately, both sides lost out here. And both sides will now learn that the Indian junta cannot be taken for a ride, either through media manipulation or through goondagardi.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anon - thanks for your post. So you think the film lost out NOT because of what it portrayed, but because SRK lost the common man with his "Pakistan se Aman" statements? That could be one point of view but then I fail to understand how Sunjay Dutt can be viewed and liked after his more direct involvement in terror attacks. I think Hindi cinema viewers look mostly for entertainment at the end of the day.

MNIK was not made with the usual entertainment quotient of romantic duets, Russian blonde dancers and some puerile comedy. Not only was a superstar in a most non-starry avatar, but the film was serious. That had an effect on its BO no doubt.

I just wonder if Komal saying it would only appeal to middle class Muslims is really what you are trying to state in other words - that general public does not consider the issue raised in the film an issue at all.

Finally - what media manipulation are your referring to? The reviews? Then one would have to explain away the mostly quite positive foreign reviews too. Mouthshut.com (Indian site) rates it at 75% after 52 user reviews - that is hardly a thumbs down.

  14. i think Anon do has a point . due to large Anti-Pakistan stand some people may have been turned off but dont consider this as Anti-Muslim its Anti-Pakistan stand .

also due to all hoopla hardly no one talked about film . so people knew mnik is releasing but had hardly had any idea what it was about ad when u dont know much about movie u r not interested in it . Also issue in MNIK is more attached to overseas people than Indians and may be that is one reason why they cannot connect to it .

Aamirs 3 idiots connected with engineers a lot and thus it did so well in US as lots of engineers from India has settled there compared to say UK or other countries .

  16. MNIK : Doganalysis - 6.5/10

Saw MNIK. The movie can be divided into two parts,

    1st part:

The movie doesnt take any kind of flying start and pretty much stays there for a good 1 hr. It tackles and jumps around so much that a boredom creeps in taking to a point of restlessness.

I do like non-linear screenplays if they are done right but here SRK’s love/infatuation with Kajol and his quest to meet the president go hand in hand so abruptly that one can lose track.
There are only few funny and enjoyable moments in the first part.

Spoiler: Also the Intermission happens without any twist or gravitas, it just happens like ” why did that happen to our son,Mandira”, they could have probably shown or given news of his Son dying and then done intermission.

    2nd Part:

This is where the movie picks up big time. Things start moving faster, things start falling into place. The pace does slag here and there but it flows well, only sore point is the whole Hurricane angle. All in all though movie is salvaged big time here.

Spoiler : I do like the way KJO/Writer make a series of events for Kajol to reconcider reconciling with SRK character, because as a mother if Kajol thinks SRK character is responsible for her son’s death and also keeps herself in guilt, she could have hated SRK forever, but they do keep throwing in the death of Kajol’s friend’s Husband and also a life threatening attack on SRK himself to make it believable for them to come together.

All in All movie ends on the right note and that’s very good.

In performances SRK is the movie itself and is present in pretty much every scene, he lives the character and you can see the effort but sometimes too much perfection can be irritating, overall i wont count this in the Swades/KHKN category but its surely first rate.

Kajol looks old and also doesn’t have much role. Screams couple of times so loudly that every scream after that seems like hers.

KJO does well overall and its a brave effort by him and its better than KANK.

The movie keeps captivating and losing track in two and fro motion but culminates in the right note, overall i will give it 6.5/10.

Wont be a strong recommendation but definitely a slight nod.
Will be surprised if the movie see’s great repeat audience but then with SRK you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Doga - thanks for your review! Kajol looks old and should retire? That seems a very ageist statement to me. She plays a 30s plus mother of a 12 year old kid. By your logic actresses like Maryl Streep should have been buried by now. It is not all about wearing short shorts and showing skin you know! They should also know how to act.

"he lives the character and you can see the effort but sometimes too much perfection can be irritating"

I did not understand - you wanted him to not give a perfect performance? Why?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Neo - I disagree on Sunjay Dutt - MunnaBhai or not, if he was involved in terror attacks then why is he successful at all? That just shows that people care for entertainment and not such politics.

Bollywood film about man seeking to meet Obama storms UK box office

A Bollywood film about a Muslim man with Asperger's syndrome seeking a meeting with Barack Obama is turning into an international hit.
My Name Is Khan has smashed box office records in the UK to become the most successful Bollywood film ever in Britain, the Sun reports. It grossed more than $1 million in its opening weekend to jump into the sixth place on the UK box office.
The movie stars Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, who made an appearance on opening night with Jonathan Ross. It tells the story of Rizwan Khan, a Muslim from Mumbai, who has Asperger's syndrome and marries a Hindu single mother, Mandira, in San Francisco. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, he is detained at LA International Airport, where his autism is mistaken for suspicious behaviour. He later starts a journey to meet the US president and clear his name.
Khan joked with fans at the premiere that he had autographed his full body scan from the security check at the London airport.

  20. My Name Is Khan not bringing in the crowds any more !

After a bumper opening, Shah Rukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan is being cold-shouldered by the audience here. Cinema hall owners blame the "non-entertaining content" of the movie.

"There is a huge fall in My Name Is Khan ticket sales. While it was just 30 percent Wednesday, it is only 20 percent Thursday. The film is not being appreciated because of the content," Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, told IANS.

"The entertainment aspect in the movie is zero. Thought is has some emotions, there is nothing much to offer," he added.

A source in PVR cinemas echoed the news.

"Our occupancy has fallen from around 90 percent to 50 percent Monday onwards because of the content of the movie. We are guessing it will stretch to one week more," said the source.

A love story set against the backdrop of racial discrimination post 9/11, My Name Is Khan grossed an estimated $18 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend.

Directed by Karan Johar, the movie is being marketed and distributed by Fox Star in India, in the US by its sister company Fox Searchlight, and in the rest of the world by parent group company 20th Century Fox International.

"There has been a drastic fall after Monday for My Name Is Khan. There is no entertainment aspect in it and lacks mass appeal. It has repeated the history of Saif Ali Khan starrer Kurbaan," said Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan.

"From critics' point of view both have been good movies but the youngsters today want only entertainment which these two could not fulfill," he added.

Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, however, has a different opinion for the fall in occupancy of the movie.

"Footfalls for My Name Is Khan have fallen but the weekend is expected to be good. The occupancy at present is about 30 percent which is decent enough considering it is a working week and that there are close to 12-14 shows per day across different properties for the movie," said Raizada.

"The movie will sustain business and occupancy will be close to 70-80 percent over the weekend," he predicted.

  21. The so called BO crash Of MNIK is a just a myth..yes the its not been exceptional..But it has collected a solid 45 cr in the fisrt week and is the third biggest opener...despite of lack of entertaiment quotoent the movie is able to bring in Moolah..In the overseas its already making a killing...So whats the big fuss is about??

SRK with his performance has earned enoromous good will from tyhe movie which would help him in his next big release...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Let us see if that happens Rajeev. I would hope so. To tell you the truth MNIK was just not a film for consumption by the masses. So in that sphere it has done pretty well.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i dont know about crash or not but 50% occupancy on weekdays is normal . i dont see why make hoopla about it . not all films can do 3 idiots and maintaing 75% occupancy on weekdays .

also BOI r lower by 3-3.5 crores on weekend . official FOX figure is 33.50 crores nett why boi has it at 29.50 crores nett

    ReplyDelete
  24. BOI numbers are right, everyone knows Fox is playing games. Movie will end up doing around 44 cr first week.

Also movie has done around 30% on weekdays, not 50%.(15/48).(12 cr i market max for it)

If the movie would have done 50%, it must have made around 23-24 cr on weekdays+29.5 cr = 53 cr atleast.

Only high end plex in few metroes are holding up better.

As for BOI underreporting SRK movies, its a joke only.If anything they were and are known as Pro SRK etc, which i dont believe.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Fox has bought MNIK for 98 cr(without music). KJO has spent 6 cr on prints in India, overseas Fox has done it.They can get max 25-30 cr from TV/DVD(thats high end of it). Total Cost around 105 cr. Rest 75 cr needs to come from Theatrical Share as there is no music for Fox.

Indian Nett looks to end at 70 cr(32-33 cr share).

Overseas now needs to do 90 cr or so for recovery.(for rest 42-43 cr share).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Raj Movie has done ATBB business overseas and very decent in India too(Hit level for other movies).

    But cost is 100+ cr?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Neo, BOI is going to give MNIK hit at 65 cr(based on theatrical share), even if Fox makes big losses.

    BOI Verdicts on MNIK

    India - Hit.
    Overseas - ATBB.

    ReplyDelete
  28. All in All BO wise, MNIK is KANK 2.

only difference is KJO made some money on KANK but Fox might get into red with MNIK.(right now its wait and watch).

If Non Traditional markets(Germany/Poland) and UAE go crazy and MNIK does 100 cr overseas, Fox might made some profit too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I follow BOI for my numbers , so for me MNIK will do Very Decent business in India, ATBB in Overseas and as for Fox, they might lose.

There will be no final verdict of MNIK from me.

Global ambition was apparent when Fox Star Studios acquired My Name is Khan for a record sum, rumoured to be as high as Rs 85 crore. The question being asked now is: How much of that is coming back?

In terms of global visibility, MNIK is on an unprecedented high. With the backing of the powerful Hollywood studio, it is Bollywood’s biggest splash overseas, with 465 prints released in 42 countries. Another 30 prints reached Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman earlier this week, 50 prints will find their way into Poland in April and another 50 will get to German screens on May 5.

The opening collections overseas have been the biggest so far. MNIK amassed $1.9 million over the first weekend in the US, ahead of the previous record of $ 1.7 m set by Om Shanti Om. It grossed £936,000 in the UK, breaking Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’s record of £750,000. In the Middle East it made US $1.4 million, ahead of 3 Idiots’ haul of US $ 350,000.

The domestic market, however, is a different story, having been written off by trade pundits on Monday morning. “It started reasonably well but is on its way out. It will be difficult to sustain because the masses have rejected it,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra. He estimates a net share of only Rs 30 crore for the distributor. Vinod Mirani, managing editor of BoxOffice India, says the film is “finished” in single screens and the drop this Monday has been drastic. According to Komal Nahata of Film Information, it has crashed at home though holding well overseas. “It will lose Rs 15-20 crore,” he predicts. According to him, it will sustain itself only in Muslim areas. Meanwhile, Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama prefers to defer his verdict, until after the second weekend.

Fox, for its part, claims the film has grossed Rs 90.2 crore worldwide over the first weekend. It defends the dip on Monday as “normal”. According to Aalif Surti, head, creative and production, Fox Star Studio India , MNIK netted Rs 5 crore all India on Monday, a figure comparable to Love Aaj Kal and ahead of OSO. “The film has just started its life. Only in India does a film die on Monday morning itself,” he says wryly. Meanwhile, speculation is rife: Will MNIK be the first Bollywood film to do overwhelmingly better abroad than in the home country?

  33. And BOI finally comes out with week 1 estimates. Not bad at all.

Toh Baat Pakki Dull My Name Is Khan Scores In Week One

    Saturday 20th February 2010 09.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Click opened to a dull response of 10-15%, Toh Baat Pakki was better but still poor at 15-20%. Both films need to pick up over the Saturday and Sunday to have worthwhile collections at the box office.

My Name Is Khan has scored in its first week, even circuits which dropped heavily over weekdays have managed to put up good first week totals. The early estimates for week one are around 45 crore nett. The film will emerge a Hit at worst unless the second week has a huge crash in collections.

Ishqiya takes its three week total to around 22 crore nett. AVERAGE

  34. Yes 45 cr was expected. Lets see where it goes from now.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Neo , since you are into Foxed Producer numbers, do you believe the following too,

    SIK - 75 cr
Hey baby - 57 cr and so on.

I remember you arguing so hard against the above, Even Veer has done like 6 cr more if we go by producers.

Anyways, i follow BOI , as you used to once.

    ReplyDelete
  36. And if you do believe 14 cr number of Fox on Sunday, then MNIK has done 20% business on Weekdays?

Its simple MNIK didnt have a wide release like 3 Idiots , it wasnt released in C centres.

    ReplyDelete
  37. By the way BOI.co.in provides Producer numbers, and they have Veer at 44,51,40,497 , BOI only 37.19 cr(Hindi).

I follow 37.19 cr number for Veer.

  38. Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan is the first Hindi movie to release in Egypt and will open in theatres across Jordan and Lebanon in the first week of March.

Similarly, the Karan Johar directed movie will be the first Hindi film to be released in Syria during the same period.

According to a spokesperson of Dharma Productions, the film has broken the record for the biggest opening for a Bollywood movie in the UAE, with some 1,35,858 tickets sold in the first four days of its release.

The spokesperson said 25 prints have been added today across the Middle East after a successful run in UAE and countries like Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

The total print count of MNIK in the West Asian countries stands at 61 prints with another 10 prints being added for Jordan, Lebanon and Syria by the first week of March taking the print count tally to 71.

In Singapore, the film has done a business of USD 210,000 in the first week which is a record for Hindi film and the response is tremendous with great word of mouth as reported by the local distributor.

  40. Doga which producer said 75 for sik or 57 for HB ? and fox is just not any other producer . they have to give collections to dot . u can ask Rikky if u want too .

as for following BOI not sure if u noticed i nearly stopped after the number changes . it feels stupid when after 2 yrs numbers change and arguement is waste of time . now everyone cannot give wrong numbers . Taran , vinod mirani , kjohar all giving out same numbers .

if one believes numbers of studio 18 for ghajini , bigcinemas for 3 idiots why not fox for mnik ?

    ReplyDelete
  41. My Name Is Khan has collected 46.08 crore nett in week one. The distributor share is 26 crore approx. Mumbai has done well considering release problems. Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Nizam are also strong but its West Bengal (especially Kolkata) and Mysore which have outperformed. The all India territorial breakdown is as follows.

    Mumbai - 15.19 crore

    Delhi/UP - 10.87 crore

    East Punjab - 4.23 crore

    West Bengal - 3.24 crore

    Bihar - 0.68 crore

    CP Berar - 1.66 crore

    CI - 1.33 crore

    Rajasthan - 2.16 crore

    Nizam - 2.67 crore

    Mysore - 2.74 crore

    Others - 1.31 crore

    TOTAL - 46.08 crore

    ReplyDelete
  42. Neo, you were making fun of Veer 7 cr numbers(stating market expansion etc) and now defending 3.25 cr numbers of MNIK?

That pretty much sums it all.

    Its fine.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Veer 7 crore was first friday or was it republic day , mnik 3.25 crore is thursday weekday .

    ReplyDelete
  44. also what i stated is weekdays has been constant for MNIK . tuesday -thursday have been in same range . i was proven right about veer from second weekend onwards . let us see what MNIK does .

Also i hope now u dont say fox is playing games as there is diff of 2 crores btw official and BOI figure . and no wants to fight for 2 crores

    ReplyDelete
  45. film has 65% drop in overseas too . looks like rejection even there .

    ReplyDelete
  46. Those are estimates, and the last estimate was revised upward by quite a bit. Let us wait for the final numbers. It is SRK's destiny that even his rejected films beat his own best and will come to close to the best by many other stars!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Doga and Neo fighting..LOL

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Pardesi: You go girl...love that comment! Take that haters and come up with slightly more creative ways to try to put SRK down!

    ReplyDelete
  49. MNIK estimate was reduced by 100K for first week. Normally with Eros we have 500K kind of swings.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thank you Minnie!

Well said ANON (by the way, would you please pick a name, any name?). I think the reports by Fox are all in range, and when BOI itself changes numbers upon review, we can only talk of ballpark figures and nor argue over a crore here and there.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Anonymous == Khanabadosh :)
ps: In Javed Saab thread also.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks! I just wanted to know how many different people were ANON!

So did you mean weekend US numbers or totals, when you were talking of reduction in numbers?

    ReplyDelete
  53. If anyone wants a more "legible" version of that table, it is now posted at the TOP of the original post.

    ReplyDelete
  54. lol Khanabadosh . i guess doga is still upset that i said veer 7 crores on opening day was not good figure .

i dont think MNIK weekday figures r good just saying its not as bad as some analysts r trying to say . btw if friday is 3.25 only than thats really bad . no increase from thursday to friday .

    ReplyDelete
  55. second weekend drop over 63% is big drop. Weekdays I am expecting bigger drop.

Donot think it is going to earn more than 70 crore from India

    ReplyDelete
  56. agree Rudresh . initially i thought it would pickup on weekend but thursday to friday-saturday hardly showed any rise . overall it looks like KANK revisited in terms of BO performance just as Doga had predicted . Even overseas film is hardly doing well with drops greated than 60% everywhere . Audience has again given verdict and Kjo needs to realise he needs to stick what he does best like KKHH ,K3g and stop trying to do face rejection trying to do diff thing . Also if he wants to try diff things he needs to check budget . making a 70 crore film on such subject is foolishness.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Agree with Neo. Kjo needs to wake up before it is too late. He does not seem to understand the economics of film-making and the scale required. After Kurbaan, MNIK is another movie produced by him that was made to a budget which was not appropriate.

Even though off late YRF are churning out only lame movies, but since they are being made a reasonable budget, they are still recovering their costs, at the minimum.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Illusionist , YRF themselves being distributors , music distributors , producers helps them to understand business better and thus they always end up atleast recovering things .

also its not just about kurbaan , MNIK i dont think WUPS or Dostana did much for their respective distributors either .

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have now heard it all. IMHO, as a cinema lover, I want to see better films not cost-recovery. For 2010 give me a WUS over any film made by YRF.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Tarans Numbers from major markets comes at 47 crores . just dont see where from other 13 crores came . it must be 50-51 crores at end of 10 days max i think .

    ReplyDelete
  61. "However, in the second week there is a decline. But still, it is not even going empty. We have got 70 to 80 per cent collection."

Though Shah Rukh Khan is leaving no stones unturned promoting his film all over, it certainly failed to impress the audiences in Mumbai."

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! These journalists should be stand-up comedians!

    ReplyDelete
  62. that MNIK has failed to imperss audience is true but this report is so much junk . which movie does more than 70-80% in second week ?

    ReplyDelete
  63. MNIK has dropped around 61-62% in India going by the above numbers.

Now this definitely doesnt come under “Crashed” category as many want to believe, but for a Star like SRK this is “Heavy Fall”.
(In last 5 years SRK didnt even have 50% falls if i am right, since KANK it hasnt happened)

Definitely its a bad trending for him, one agrees or not.

In USA its $827,919 in Second week which is 67.6% fall.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The second week collections of My Name Is Khan have come in higher than earlier estimates. The collections are 17.97 crore nett. Below are territory breakdowns. The two week total is 64 crore nett approx with a distributor share of 34 crore.

    Mumbai – 6.78 crore

    Delhi/UP – 4.02 crore

    East Punjab – 1.51 crore

    West Bengal – 1.20 crore

    Bihar – 23 lakhs

    CP Berar – 56 lakhs

    CI – 49 lakhs

    Rajasthan – 66 lakhs

    Nizam – 97 lakhs

    Mysore – 1.04 crore

    Others – 52 lakhs

    TOTAL – 17.97 crore

    ReplyDelete
  65. Now, MNIK has done more than So called hits of Salman/Saif but the budgets were way low and SRK himself is a bigger star right now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Considering the fact that movie will end up around 73 cr in India, it can be termed decent success in India and taking big Overseas into account,it can be called Hit Overall.

Fox still might be hovering around recovery stages.

As for trending 3 I showed that even after 80 cr opening one can have 55 cr second week!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Also since BOI number for 2nd week is bigger than Taran, i dont think anyone will be questioning it right now,but please dont add first week of Taran and Second week of BOI ;)

Whatever permutations and combinations we do, moive wont do more than 73(my number)-75 cr in India, and thats the bottom like as Doga said so.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I was expecting BOI number to go 1 cr higher as i got info from Tango/Ritik about 2nd weekend being close to 12 cr not 11 cr.

But BOI always corrects itself as those were estimates!

    ReplyDelete
  69. As people can follow Fox/Taran numbers all they want but if someone follows Boxoffice little bit they will know the following fact,

" MNIK was a smaller release than 3 I, it was confirmed by SRK himself with Interview with Taran, cinemas are only 1108 first week, they targetted only A and B centres more"

Now thus the market max of MNIK can only be 12.5 or 13 cr at max, thus the first sunday number of Taran/Fox = 14 cr was totally wrong and thus thereafter all of their numbers go down the drain.

    Rest is upto discretion.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks Doga, for sharing those thoughts. I think when comparing MNIK to other films the GENRE cannot be ignored. Saif and Salman films were NOT in a serious genre with no singing dancing crowd pleasing moments. Let them take a film like MNIK to 75+ (my number!) in India and we can talk. By the way, SRK did take a modest budget off beat film CDI to almost the Saif Salman levels before. And overseas throws all Saif Salman comparisons out of the window.

    ReplyDelete
  71. doga what was market capacity of 3 idiots ? did it do 100% on sunday ? what is market capacity of mnik ? if u have written document give it . otherwise dont give bullshit . why will fox do ghapla of 2 crores in first weekend and not elsewhere ?

    ReplyDelete
  72. and all numbers thereafter from BOI/Taran matches ditto to fox . even 2 weekend numbers BOI were low and matched fox numbers so one can hardly say they r going down drain . also to give ur fact u r considering two things . one 3 idiots numbers were correct to the point . second it did 100% all over and not even 95% at places .

and tell me whats diff btw prints and cinemas ?

Fox numbers and BOI numbers both r meeting at 64-65 . its clear BOI have realised their mistake and adjusted numbers later on . first week their monday number was higher than fox and second week they r higher bye a crore than foxs 17 crore total .

    ReplyDelete
  73. I got this reply for the same comment on other forum,

"Kanwal bhai tats wrong how can u compare srk and sallu, wanted is one of the biggest movie in this decade becaz movie ran extremly well more number of pple has watched wanted and i m definitely sure tat veer has out done mnik in terms of number of watch"

    ReplyDelete
  74. Even i agree, all the numbers will match in the end.

Also 73 is my estimate, if it does 80, i will go to that.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Rab ne did 55 cr Profit.

    Wanted did 21 cr Profit.

MNIK will probably breakeven for Fox.

2-5 cr here and there wont change the whole scenario.

As for genre, def it gives SRK a very good performance and if MNIK does become cult like Swades, BO wont matter anymore, as you used to say Pardesi.

    But its fine.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Neo, cant believe you are trying to defend Fox/Taran who claimed 35 cr share within 10 days and that too out of 60 cr nett.

First week was 26 cr share out of 48 cr nett, then it gets 9 cr share from 12 cr nett, and that too from a Plex dominated movie!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Why are BOI numbers higher than Fox numbers later int the week and second week? I think it is because BOI realized Fox numbers were correct in week one and have now matched that with later adjustments. About shares - did BOI not say 35 crore shares from India? How do we explain their claim?

Back to Saif and Salman - it is to SRK's credit that his "perception flops" are compared to the biggest hits of the other two!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Fight over here.

Komal Sahab ne to 44 crore first week bolaa hai ;)

waise 1-2 crore se kya farak padtaa hai? 20 wi sahi ke lomdi ke paas bahut hai :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Komal Sahab also claimed that multiplexes were empty on opening Sunday - how does that explain even 44cr opening week? And now he is going around proclaiming demise of Brand Bachchan. I see an unholy alliance of Bachchan and SRK camps to counteract Komal ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Somebody comparing saif/salman hits with that of SRK's..??? That guy must be nuts....MNIK with any TOM dick and Harry (Read Saif, salman and others) would have done 20-25 cr at the BO at best..Period...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Doga why r u neglecting the higher totals from BOI in wk1 ? and i never talked of shares as i honestly dont know how shares r calculated . komal said 20 crores share for blue from 32 crores and i have no idea how .

Also u know me quite well and i have always said for me nett is more imp than shares as exhibitors r imp too .

    ReplyDelete
  82. My Name Is Khan To Hit 70 Crore In Three Weeks

My Name Is Khan will hit the 70 crore nett mark by the end of its third week as it accumulated around 4 crore nett over its third weekend and the weekdays should give another 2 crore nett. After that the film could add another 2-3 crore nett. The two week territorial distributor shares (approx figures) are as follows.

    Mumbai - 10.80 crore

    Delhi/UP - 8.10 crore

    East Punjab - 3.10 crore

    West Bengal - 2.55 crore

    Bihar - 55 lakhs

    CP Berar - 1.40 crore

    CI - 1.05 crore

    Rajasthan - 1.55 crore

    Nizam/Andhra - 2.05 crore

    Mysore - 2 crore

    Others - 1 crore

All INDIA TOTAL - 34.15 crore

After two weeks the film has the 15th highest distributor share in the history of Hindi cinemas and is likely to enter the top ten at the end of its run.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Raj,Pardesi, no one is comparing SRK to Salman,Saif etc. SRK is Huger star by any parameter right now.

Probably the comment came out wrongly.

  84. Thankfully with MNIK ending its run and 3 I too, hopefully Bollywood will get 1.5 years without these 2, the Ace and King needs some rest.

  85. ‘MNIK’ among top 5 box office hits in the Middle East

Shah Rukh Khan starrer “My Name Is Khan” (MNIK) has become the highest Bollywood earner in the Middle East with $3.3. million in collections.

“In other Islamic markets too, it continues to grow and has crossed over to non-diaspora audiences. In Indonesia, for example, the film has grown from six to 14 screens and has seen a jump of 300 percent in week three,” Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios India, said in a statement.

The film is to open in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria March 10.

So far, “MNIK” worldwide earning is about Rs.174.6 crore ($37.5 million) with India contributing Rs.102.2 crore and international markets recording around Rs.72.4 crore.

Directed by Karan Johar, “My Name Is Khan” explores lives in the post-9/11 period in the US. The movie has Shah Rukh playing a man with Asperger's Syndrome and Kajol plays his love interest.

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), “MNIK” is now tracking to become the number four movie of all time, competing with Hollywood blockbusters like “The Dark Knight”, “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen”, “Spider Man 3” and “Twilight: New Moon”.
