Dabangg 81.50 cr. first week; beats 3 Idiots - updated week 3 numbers!

 taran adarsh
Top 5: 'Dabangg' collects Rs 16 cr in Week 3, total: Rs 131.5 cr nett

Dabangg opened this morning to an earth shattering start all over despite bad weather in the North trying to play spoil sport. The first shows opened at around 9.00 am and as expected the response was simply mindboggling. Last year Three Idiots started shows as early as 6.30 am in the morning but this was not the case with Dabangg as very early morning shows have a limited turnout. The ticket rates of Dabangg have also not been hiked like for Three Idiots. Some collections from major theatres for first show are as follows.

Cinemax Thane (9.30 am) - 15,500 (100%)
Big Odeon Delhi (10.30 am) - 53,500 (100%)
Wave Raja Garden Delhi (10.15 am) - 22,100 (100%)
Wave Ludhiana (10.15am) - 38,500 (100%)
Wave Ludhiana (10.45am) - 38,500 (100%)

Wave Ludhiana is also house full for the 11.30am show. This is a very good sign as collections are huge in East Punjab which is a multiplex circuit and also a circuit where Salman Khan films tend to under perform. Wanted was weakest in Punjab compared to the rest of India. The single screen figures are likely to be like nothing seen before.

  1. Dabangg has simply rocked the CP Berar and Rajasthan circuits. Some single screen theatres in CP Berar started shows at 6.00am and the response was an earth shattering 100%. Rajasthan has seen the biggest release ever for a film by a distance and practically every centre is 100% leaving the trade in Rajasthan in awe. Salman Khan films always open well in Rajasthan but this is something out of the ordinary.

E Square in Pune has 6,300 tickets sold for Friday, 6,300 for Saturday and 6,300 for Sunday meaning weekend is already full and due to excessive demand from patrons who refuse to take no for an answer meaning the theatre will have to change its schedule this early into the week and add extra shows of Dabangg due to public demand.

Top 5 Opening Fridays: 3 Idiots 13 cr, Raajneeti 10.5 cr, Kites 10.5 cr, Housefull 10 cr, Ghajini 9 cr. Dabangg wl be at par with 3I or more

So Taran has spoken, only competition to Dabangg is 3I, as they say well begun is half done, lets see how it fares from here on. WOM being absolutely majestic, this should be at par with 3I, but then Monday onwards, 3I had an advantage of Xmas holidays, nothing like that for Dabangg

Top 5 opening wknd: 3 Idiots 41 cr [incl Thu previews], Raajneeti 34 cr, MNIK 33.2 cr, Housefull 32 cr, Ghajini 30 cr [4-day wknd 40 cr].

3I has a huge lead, but Dabangg should catch up more or less.

  8. As expected and predicted by this writer time and again, DABANGG opened to an earth-shattering and record-breaking response across the country. The film drew full houses from its first show onwards everywhere. Even at multiplexes, where ceetees and taalis are a rarity, the response to DABANGG was overwhelming, with fans clapping and whsitling at Salman’s intro, Salman’s dialogue [at several places] and of course, the climax fight.

DABANGG has opened in 1,584 screens in India and in terms of numbers, the film is expected to have a bigger Friday than RAAJNEETI [the biggest opener of 2010, which collected Rs. 10.5 cr. nett on Friday] and should be at par [or bigger] than 3 IDIOTS, which is the biggest opener ever [collected Rs. 13 cr. nett on Friday]. Eid will be celebrated on Saturday, so once can imagine the [grand] business on not just Saturday and Sunday, but also Monday. As per initial trends, DABANGG will be competing with just one film – 3 IDIOTS.

    TOP 5 OPENING FRIDAYS

    3 IDIOTS Rs. 13 cr.
    RAAJNEETI Rs. 10.5 cr.
    KITES Rs. 10.5 cr.
    HOUSE FULL Rs. 10 cr.
    GHAJINI Rs. 9 cr.

    TOP 5 3-DAY OPENING WEEKENDS

3 IDIOTS Rs. 41 cr. [incl. Thursday previews]
    RAAJNEETI Rs. 34 cr.
MY NAME IS KHAN Rs. 33.2 cr.
    HOUSE FULL Rs. 32 cr.
GHAJINI Rs. 30 cr. [4-day wknd. was Rs. 40 cr.]

  9. Its more like,(only first 3 days)

    3 I = 38 cr
    Raajneeti = 34 cr
    Housefull = 31 cr
    Ghajini = 30 cr
    MNIK = 29.5 cr

Dabangg should be around 35 cr atleast.

  11. Everything hinges upon Mumbai, as per BOI

Dabangg has taken a thunderous bumper opening all over India and it is pretty clear that it is going to be the first or second biggest first day in the history Hindi cinema. Dabanng to be number one will have to cross the Three Idiots day one figures. The day one territorial numbers of Three Idiots that Dabangg chases are below.

    Mumbai - 5.22 crore

    Delhi/UP - 2.39 crore

    East Punjab - 1.10 crore

    West Bengal - 72 lakhs

    Bihar - 18 lakhs

    CP Berar - 53 lakhs

    CI - 48 lakhs

    Rajasthan - 68 lakhs

    Nizam - 70 lakhs

    Mysore - 60 lakhs

    Tamil Nadu/Kerala - 20 lakhs

    Assam - 13 lakhs

    Orissa - 7 lakhs

    TOTAL - 13 crore

As per early indications many of these day one circuit records of Three idiots are going to fall but it will be Mumbai collections that will determine whether Dabangg crosses Three Idiots. Three Idiots was just out of this world in the Mumbai circuit especially in Mumbai city and Pune and if Dabanng can get to within 10% of Three Idiots Mumbai figure of 5.22 crore it is likely to become the biggest opener ever.

    Rajasthan Territory 3I------> 69.00 lacs
Rajasthan Territory Dabangg-> 80.15 lacs (Biggest EVER)

    East Punjab 3I-------> 1.11 Crs
East Punjab Dabangg--> 1.25 Crs (Biggest EVER)

Only Mumbai(with is huge territory), will decide if Dabangg can beat 3 Idiots weekend of 38 cr.

  17. Doga - 3 days collection of Raajneeti were said to be 34 crore. I think Dabangg is releasing in more prints and shows. Read at PFC that it is playing 18 shows @ Fame Dhanbaad!I think it is just matter of time 3 idiots weekend record will be broken. I think over period of time even 80 crore in a week will also be broken. What is most difficult or would take the longest to break is 56 crore second week of 3 idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  18. First week 80 cr of 3 Idiots, 2nd week 55 and total 203 will take a lot of time to be broken.

And i think only inflation can break the, that is easy 7 years.

  21. Dabangg Certain To Smash Three Idiots Day One Record

    Friday 10th September 2010 23.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dabangg is all set to smash the all India day one record of Three Idiots which was 13 crore nett. The totals from some circuits are in and they are just out of this world figures. Rajasthan day one was 81 lakhs nett as compared to 68 lakhs nett for Three Idiots. CI is 62 lakhs nett as against the 48 lakhs nett of Three Idiots.

Rajasthan and CI are obviously circuits that were going to perform phenomenally for Dabanng as they are single screen dominated but it is the early estimate for a multiplex circuit like East Punjab which shows Dabangg has probably smashed Three Idiots day one record and possibly by a distance.

Three Idiots grossed 1.10 crore nett on day one in East Punjab while the early estimates for Dabangg are coming in the 1.25-1.30 crore nett range. The figures from East Punjab also suggest that Delhi/UP is probably way above Three Idiots as Delhi and East Punjab normally give similar performance and UP will be even better than Delhi due to many single screens in the state..

  22. Dabangg has broken First day of 3 Idiots.

The first day business of Dabangg is looking to come in the 14 crore nett range as per early estimates. There is limited data from Mumbai city so if collections there are stronger than being estimated then the figure could even edge over the 14 crore nett mark.

The film has simply rocked the country and the weekend business may beat the previous record of 38 crore by a big margin. Earlier most records were beaten either on Christmas or Diwali but with Dabangg its Eid week which is smashing all opening records by a margin.

Last year Salman Khan had an Eid release in Wanted but that film had a Good/Average opening only to pick up and go on a run after Eid.

  32. It is curious that some of the hardcore Salman's fans have not liked the movie!

For me Wanted was just mindless masala with dialoguebaazi..I preferred uneven Veer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I liked Veer too. Wanted was horrible for me, but maybe Dabangg will be better than that? Have yet to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think the Eid effect will kick in, KB, Saturday, Sunday are beyond full, POlice had to do lathicharge at few places. But yes, overall the wom is not entirely positive, there ahve been some who didn't like it.

Though Salman fans not liking it is kinda.... surprising.

Oh BTW same with me, KB, I also liked Veer and hated Wanted. I have no idea why Veerr flopped, but I think it did work a little, it got around 39 crs, I think, but Doga will know better. Though I expected Veer to perform better but it did not. May be because of incoherence, but then Wanted was as incoherent, infact much more.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Haaawwww. There are people who saw Veer?! You learn new things everyday. I hear that Suriely (and yeah, I can't spell hindi. sue me. ) Aankhon song recently; it was beautiful.

  36. But say whatever, Salman has found his groove, thats where he belongs, in the massy segment. I don't mean any sarcasm, I don't think any thing is lower, massy or classy, but just that Salman has somehow struck the chord again with his audience. And I am glad.

I want more good movies per year, and not the pseudo intellectual stuff, the movies which are trying too hard ot be intelligent. Salman seems to be providing that for now.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Nia, its a nice movie, but as far as songs are concerned it should be pretty much the best album of the eyar

    ReplyDelete
  38. In both Wanted and Veer the common thing was Salman's hair line and hair length, the lack of continuity was hilarious. It also showed his devil may care attitude; and no one had problems with it - Salman films are now beyond media criticism after Wanted. The same happened to Big B in his masala phase, the films were the same over and over again and the crowds were lapping them up and no one dares to point out that the emperor had no clothes on :D

    From KB's link

Dabangg craze continued on Saturday with unbelievable unheard of collections. The all India Saturday record is likely to be broken by an unimaginable margin. The film is simply unstoppable. Three Idiots had a 11.50 crore nett Saturday but Dabangg will go well past it. The figures from CI and Rajasthan are below.

    CI

    Friday - 62 lakhs

    Saturday - 64.50 lakhs

    Rajasthan

    Friday - 81 lakhs

    Saturday - 88 lakhs

The first day figures are unbelievable but second day has even surpassed first day and it is very rare in circuits like CI and Rajasthan that collections jump on Saturday when a film records an unimaginable bumper opening on Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Saturday is 15.5 cr, weekend will be 45+ cr, which is around what Housefull/MNIK did in first full week.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Let Dabangg cross the 200 crore nett mark at the box office. Only then say that it has shattered 3 Idiots records or that Salman has pushed aside Aamir. Let it create history overseas (3 Idiots was the biggest film overseas, till MNIK came) and then say that Salman has pushed Aamir aside.

115 crore nett (Ghajini) and 202 crore nett (3 Idiots) are the actual records of Aamir. Let Salman cross any of those and then try to pull down Aamir. Kudos to Salman for his success. But don't say that Salman has pushed Aamir aside yet.

Salman has certainly put egg on SRK's face since now SRK is behind BOTH Aamir AND Salman! Bechaara media-hyped ''King''. Tch!Tch! Even Salman beat him to death!

  43. As expected, Dabangg probably came from some other world

The second day numbers of Dabangg are from another world and the industry has seen nothing like this before. The film has shattered the second day all India record of Three Idiots by an unimaginable 4.75 crore nett. Every record in the book has not just been shattered but obliterated. The second day of Dabanng is in the 16.25 crore taking its two day business to 30.50 crore nett approx. The territorial breakdown of the second day is follows.

    Mumbai - 5.75 crore

    Delhi/UP - 3.70 crore

    East Punjab - 1.49 crore

    West Bengal - 70 lakhs

    Bihar - 30 lakhs

    CP Berar - 95 lakhs

    CI - 64 lakhs

    Rajasthan - 88 lakhs

    Nizam/ Andhra - 75 lakhs

    Mysore - 65 lakhs

Dabangg has obliterated all weekend collections to shreds by collecting around 49 crore nett as per early estimates. The final figure may come in a bit lower or a bit higher but it does not matter as the film industry has seen nothing like this before over the first weekend.

Three Idiots had a 38 crore nett three day weekend which was looked at as being earth shattering numbers but Dabangg has made those collections look small.

Dabangg has broken every record in the book be it single screen or multiplex in every centre be it A,B, C or D centre. Mass circuit like Bihar or class circuit like Mysore its the same everywhere.

CI the industry barometer for single screen business had a 1.98 crore nett weekend (Three Idiots - 1.36 crore nett) while East Punjab the barometer for multiplex business was 4.43 crore nett (Three Idiots - 3.22 crore nett).

Dabangg has done well overseas with UAE being fantastic with the fourth biggest opening ever in that market. The preliminary numbers from major markets in Overseas are as follows.

    United Kingdom - £310,000

    North America - $600,000

    UAE - $970,000 (4 Days)

    Australia - $125,000

The overseas opening is the second biggest of 2010 after My Name Is Khan. The three day weekend business is around $2.40 million and it missed out on a big market like Pakistan where it would have probably beaten My Name Is Khan to become the biggest Hindi grosser ever in Pakistan.

  71. As per indications of WOM, at least at Indore Dabangg showed huge drop, I think it will be the same case now on. I don't think movie has been accepted the way 3I was.

How much Salaman's 26/11 controversy was responsible, I have no idea, but I think its more because of audiences not exactly loving the movie.

  72. Dabangg continued to smash more records on Monday. The early estimate for Monday is around 10.75 crore which takes the films business to around 60 crore nett in just four days.

Three Idiots had a Monday of nearly 11 crore nett. It could be that Dabangg edges ahead when the complete figures are in or stays just behind but both films have a similar all India Monday.

Dabangg has smashed many circuit records on Monday like Delhi/UP, Bihar, CP Berar, Rajasthan, Assam and Orissa.

The film got benefit Basri Eid and single screens falls were minimal as compared to Friday business. Dabangg is on coruse to beat the 79 crore Friday - Thursday business record of Three Idiots.

  77. Dabangg has Fantastic Tuesday

Dabangg continued its dream run on Tuesday with collections around the 8 crore nett mark as per early estimates. There were new circuit records in Delhi/UP, Bihar, CP Berar, Assam and Orissa. Infact Delhi/UP is on the sort of run never witnessed before with the Delhi/UP total being more than 15.75 crore nett in five days which is more than the 14.75 crore nett of Three Idiots in seven days plus paid previews.

The five day total is now around the 67.75 crore nett mark as it chases the record 79 crore nett total of Three Idiots over seven days. The Three Idiots seven day total should be crossed but it may not reach the weekly total of Three Idiots of 81.75 crore nett which included paid previews.

  80. Indore is always kept as a standard barometer as its a "Model City" with Plexes in a Mid-Level City.

Mostly it provides good samples but in some cases it varies, like here in Dabangg.

Also like during MNIK, Indore totally crashed monday onwards, like 70-80% falls but other places like mysore, kolkotta etc, held on for sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  81. BOI fixed that mistake later, its 76.3 cr for 3 Idiots 7 day week. and 79.05 with previews.

Dabangg will cross 7 day figure as that will be compared, and good chance is it will do 80+ cr itself.

"The five day total is now around the 67.75 crore nett mark as it chases the record 79 crore nett total of Three Idiots over seven days. The Three Idiots seven day plus paid previews total of 79 crore nett should be crossed as Dabangg finishes the week with 80 crore nett plus collections."

Total difference of 2-3 crore. 3 Idiots first week will be overtaken but with paid preview I am not sure, raw data will tell a better picture. I am just wondering what if Dabangg was well made? It could have easily went near 3 Idiots Final NETT.

ps: Just a thought, when BOI changes it saturday estimates on tuesday after the week has ended how are the numbers from far flung area so accurately calculated on daily basis?

    ReplyDelete
  92. The unbelievable dream run of Dabangg continued on Wednesday as the film grossed an approx 7 crore nett on Wednesday as per early estimates. The six day business is now over 75 crore nett while the seven day business of Three Idiots was 76 crore nett. The seven day business of Dabangg is looking to finish the week at 81.50-82 crore nett.

The Dabanng story so far is a 49.25 crore nett weekend followed by a 10.60 crore Monday, 8.60 crore nett Tuesday and 7 crore (early estimate) for Wednesday for a total of 75.45 crore nett for six days.

The week one distributor share of Dabangg will be an unheard, unseen and unbelievable 52 crore approx.

    ReplyDelete
  93. KB may be because weekends are hell busy? For example, weekend business of Dabangg has been double that of regular days, that makes it difficult for theater owners to get data and BOI to publish.

Also, Weekend might be off for most of the BOI employees, hence not much updates.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Though KB I agree with you that BO reporting in India is shady to say the least, but we know about Taran as well, that guy doesn't even total right, and I bet just to misreport not some mistake, because mistakes happen once or twice, not so many times.

Now since he stopped giving details, nothing can be said for sure.

Anyhow, Dabangg is sure to shatter all first week records of a holiday season movie in a non holiday week... Wonder how much Indian market has swelled.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Dabangg is certain to smash the first week record of Three Idiots. The first seven day business of Dabanng will be more than the first week plus paid preview business of Three Idiots.

The first week distributor share is likely to come in at least 52 crore which is a huge 5.50 crore higher than the first week share of Three Idiots. The share of Dabanng could go even a bit higher and it is amazingly just 1 crore short of the lifetime share of Salman Khan's biggest hit ever Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

The film is holding up very well on weekdays and a huge second weekend is on the cards. Single screens are phenomenal with just 0-10% daily drops on the weekdays.

Also even when Trade Guide(Taran) and Film Information(Komal) or Supercinema provided reported centres, they were at best 40-50% samples from which one had to formulate and estimate the final nett.

  112. ‘Dabangg’ collects 6.75 cr on Wednesday, single screens are super-strong
    By Taran Adarsh, September 16, 2010 – 16:03 IST

Dabangg DABANGG collected approx. Rs. 6.75 cr. nett on Wednesday, taking its 6-day total to approx. Rs. 74 cr. to Rs. 74.5 cr. nett. The film continues to perform exceedingly well at single screens, while multiplexes have shown the usual drops on weekdays. Like this writer pointed out yesterday, the first week distributors’ share will be on the higher side [approx. Rs. 50 cr. or in that range] since the rentals at single screens are as low at 15% to 20% to 30% and the distributors’ share, therefore, will be 85%, 80% or 70%, depending on the property and location.

3 IDIOTS had collected Rs. 79.55 cr. nett in Week 1 [including Thursday previews] and DABANGG is likely to cross this figure in Week 1, at the rate it’s faring.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Doga those 40-50% numbers used to help giving an idea if reported numbers r correct or not , obviously when they saw people using their numbers Komal , Taran stopped it .

Also we clearly see some biased reporting in komals , Tarans or BOI and thus that makes it hard to believe their numbers more particularly single screens . i also hope people giving distributor share also shows us how much a particular film helped in saving a single screen or what share it gave to exhibitor of plex . If single screens gets fixed rent irrespective of how film performs its hard to understand how they will benefit from a particular film .

    ReplyDelete
  114. Looks like results are too close to call ;)

  115. Taran has 81 cr and BOI 81.5 cr.

    ReplyDelete
  116. That beats 7 day total of 3 Idiots by around 4-5 cr and if we include paid previews then ~ 2 cr.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Why should Dabangg not be compared to 3 Idiots in the long term:

One hand we have Good timepass kind of movie other hand Universally Loved movie.

Dabangg was infact ~8-9 cr ahead during weekend and ended up being ~ 2 cr ahead in the end.(If we dont take paid previews of 3I, then the respective numbers will be 10-11 cr and 4-5 cr)

Its losing steam compared to 3 Idiots and ofcourse it will, the latter was a movie which someone saw and then took their family to see it and so on.

But in and of itself it has hugely surpassed expectations in terms of sustaining during the week, because as just a “Entertaining,Timepass movie” it should have fallen more(going by history).

3 Idiots was like a Hurricane never seen before in the Plex era. It collected a whopping ~ 10 cr each day for the first 10 days , ending at 115 cr in 10 days.

Dabangg is a bulldozer, going over 3 Idiots first weekend but then by weekdays it started going 10-8-7-6 and so on.

2nd Weekend will be big(23-25 cr) and by the end of 2nd week should have crossed or reached near Ghajini.

From there its to be seen if it totally goes out of Plexes or not, but Single Screens will keep going for few week, thus ending its run around 130-140 cr or so.

So, Leave all these 3 I comparisons.

Right now its about enjoying the record.

BTW it can even do 150 cr.

So 135-150 cr range is there.

That would be like 3+ crores if we dont include Paid previews(2.75 cr).

  120. Without previews Dabangg easily crosses 3 idiots based on daily updates from most of the reported sites. But including preview only BOI will cross rest will fall short marginally. But I think all of them are reporting producer numbers as in 3 Idiots. In any case worthy performance. Will try to get hold of Komal's number for raw data analysis.

The film has smashed the first week record of Three Idiots even if we include the paid previews of that film.

The film has set new first week circuit records in Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Bihar, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan, Assam and Orissa while in Mumbai, West Bengal, Nizam/Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala the records of Three Idiots have held up. 136. WOW WOW WOW
Doga, these are like astronomical numbers... more so because the movie stars Salman, who didn't have a great run at BO lately.

Doga, what are Salman's next ventures? Do you think that they can do pretty much the same? Like Aamir followed Ghajini with 3I? can Sallu do the same?

  141. Dabangg BEATS GHAJINI

Dabangg grossed a huge 35-36 crore nett in week two taking its two week business to over 116 crore nett and becoming the second biggest nett grosser in the history of Hindi cinema. The two week distributor share of the film is around 67-68 crore which is also second highest total ever.

The second week total is also the second highest ever but well short of the 56 crore nett record of Three Idiots.

The third week will be interesting as like the first two weeks there is no competition for the film and weekday business in week two was steady. It is possible that the third weekend can do business in the 10-14 crore nett range.

  144. Whatever you say guys... Salman is now trying to be a good human being at least in public which is good for the fans and followers, After he was jailed in Jaipur in black buck case, the jail stay has revived him , his thinking and behaviour. He is behaving matured now !, I am no fan of any khans except Aamir khan, But as for as SRK is concerned, I would say he has lot of attitude problems, making fun of co-actors, directors, producers etc does not paint him in good taste, recently i watched his interview in some private channel, where he was talking about DON2 (Which is a bakwas movie ) he quoted himself saying that "I am not here to compete but to rule", i could make out is arrogance and unwanted proud in his chat. He is loosing friends day by day for not valuing the relations. He is more interested in Dubai, Germany and moroccon links he has and where he makes more money.
