Sachin Tendulkar Group captain: need and logic behind it

For his glorious contribution to the gentleman's game, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar was conferred the honorary rank of group captain by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal P. V. Naik at a function here on Friday.

Now its a news first I thought doesn't even worth mentioning, but then I thought why not let my views be out rather than just echo in my head. I am a Sachin Tendulkar fan, no doubts about it. For me cricket = Sachin, I watch matches only for his batting, my starts with his batting, ends with him getting out, for me if Sachin is not playing, that doesn't even qualify as a cricket match to me. But even being such a fan, I am amused, surprised and shcoked, nothing in a good way. about this latest piece of news.

What has he done to earn the rank of a group captain in Indian Air Force? I can imagine his contribution and achievements in the game on cricket are impossible to even dream of, forget to match, but group captain? If they really had to make one additional group captain, I bet there must be someone out there who might be little more deserving than Sachin in IAF itself. And won't that person feel weird about it? Sachin has been conferred all kinds of adulation, some awards have been inaugrated for him, he has been recipient of the biggest sporting awards of the nation, and not to mention citizen awards, so this IAF doesn't make one bit of sense to me.

I can imagine that these are just honorary titles which doesn't mean anything, but then if thats the case, why give titles like group captain as a worthless title? If it means something, that Sachin will now be getting pay from IAF, or some perks, then is he not getting enough already in the frm of countless endorsements, adulation, appreciation, tax free Feraris, and all that? I can even imagine that IAF wanted to honor Sachin, and they could have done that in some other way, but giving your uniform and titles to a guy who has not really done anything to deserve it in the first place?

Anyhow, Indian politics work in weird ways.... for now, congratulation Group Captain Sachin Tendulkar.
