Box Office: Anjaana Anjaaani & Robot

ANJAANA ANJAANI, riding on the star power of Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, opened to very good houses at multiplexes across the country. Multiplexes in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Hyderabad and other centres opened to almost packed house. The opening and noon shows were in 80% to 90% range. At several stations, they were 100% too. However, the single screens are expected to be slow not just for ANJAANA ANJAANI, but for ROBOT too since the audience hasn't really gone out in mass-dominated Hindi belt.

ROBOT [Hindi version] has started slowly, its opening was 30% in morning and noon shows, but the reports are very good and the film is expected to grow by evening. The film has opened to an exceptional response in South.

Eros and producer Sajid Nadiadwala are expected to book good profits with ANJAANA ANJAANI. The economics of the film is as follows:-

Cost of production: Rs. 38 cr.

+ P & A: Rs. 6 cr. to Rs. 7 cr.

Total investment on the project: Rs. 45 cr.

Money recovered:-

Satellite Rights: Rs. 22 cr.

Music Rights: Rs. 8 cr.

Money received from sale of various territories,

other than Mumbai, Delhi-U.P., Punjab,

Overseas and Home Video: Rs. 13 cr.

Money recovered so far: Rs. 43 cr.

Eros is distributing the film in Mumbai, Delhi-U.P., Punjab and Overseas and the revenue generated from these territories, besides Home Video, will add to the profits of the film. The above chart clearly indicates that at least 50% of the receovery has been from sale of Satellite Rights itself.

  1. Much like every movie releasing nowdays, it has already covered up itself by deals. It wouldn't matter how the movie fares on theaters. Get the promotions right and enough shows, you are bound to make money. One of the big reasons why people are focussing more on gloss than content.

  2. yeah, if you make the film within reasonable cost, say under 45 crores, have gloss and stars, then it is impossible to lose money unless the film is a total disaster. In such a climate, we can never expect to move beyond the Aishas and IHLS and AA type films.

  3. Why do we have to move beyond IHLS and AA? They are integral genres of movies as well.

  4. These numbers by Taran look too good to be true, will wait for others to confirm.

Especially Satellite only Ghajini or Raajneeti got 22+ cr.

AA probably went with a package of one big(AA) and 2-3 smaller movies, as is usually the case, 22 could have been for the whole package.

    Lets see.

  5. Anjaana Anjaani Fantastic Opening Robot (Hindi) Slow Start

    Saturday 2nd October 2010 09.00 IST

Anjaana Anjaani took a fantastic start at multiplexes. There were release issues at places as some cities were shut until afternoon due to security concerns after the Ayodhya decision. The reports are mixed but it should emerge a winner on the strength of its superb opening and youth patronisation. Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Punjab had a bumper opening.

Khichdi opened to a poor response and although reports are fair it will still struggle to make any impact at the box office.

Benny Aur Babloo opened very poorly and has no chance at the box office.

Robot (Hindi) had a slow start, it did improve slightly as the day progressed but the jump was not big. The film has good reports but it remains to be seen if they can translate into good collections.

The original Tamil version of Robot Endhiran took a monumental opening in Tamil Nadu and has extraordinary reports and will emerge the highest grossing Tamil film ever.

Dabangg added 16 crore nett approx in week three taking its three week total to 133 crore nett. ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER

  6. Robot opens to full house... not exactly a news, right? How about, Robot opens to full house at 4:00 AM Yep, thats craze of Rajini for you.

Tickets in black were sold for Rs 5000 EACH. Not just that one show, but even the shows of 5:45 AM were having similar crazy scenes outside the hall.

Even the big exhibitors like PVR showed the first show at 8:00 AM. So Robot was very much like Avatar and TDK of India.

  7. Robot (Hindi) could not make much impact at the box office as it grossed around 7 crore nett in its opening weekend.

The film did better on Saturday and Sunday but the big jump in collections was not there. The collections were mainly from Mumbai circuit (3.25 crore nett) and CPCI (1 crore nett). The North remained very dull.

The shows of Endhiran (Tamil) were much better be it Mumbai, Delhi or Gurgaon but it was a very limited release.

Overall Robot (Hindi) has not done well especially if we look at the release which was pretty wide. It will have to depend on the weekdays and second weekend if it is to put up a decent final total.

  8. Anjaana Anjaani had a good weekend of 24 crore nett as per early estimates. The film had a troubled weekend in that Friday was affected with bandhs and release disputes and then Sunday it took a hit in its best area Delhi NCR due to the commonwealth games. The film lost around 1.50 crore nett due to release problems and commonwealth games.

The film will be a big earner for makers as costs are pretty low and the film has earned well from satellite and music while overseas has also contributed well. The Indian theatrical business will depend on what happens on the weekdays at the multiplexes. Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab have fared best. In the South it had huge competition in the form of Endhiran and the CP CI Rajasthan belt suffered from release problems.

The daily breakdowns were 7.25 crore for Friday, 8.75 crore for Saturday and 8 crore nett for Sunday. Sunday suffered mainly as collections in Delhi/UP and East Punjab dropped due to the commonwealth games while rest of the country was slightly lower but that is normal after a holiday.

  9. Oh AA did incur a setback in Delhi region, I bet. Considering that the whole city was locked down for whole one day, and RK fan base lies in Delhi.

Anyhow, the movie has performed way better than what I expected.

Whereas no surprise from Robot, whatever it earns from Hindi release is like a bonus for the producer anyways.

  10. Anjaana Anjaani had a decent first week of 32.50 crore nett but collections on weekdays were not good. The film will make good money for makers due to big prices fetched from satellite and music but theatrically it will be a Above Average/Semi Hit fare with around 23-24 crore distributor share.

Robot could not make much impact with around 10.50 crore nett business in week one. The film did a bit better at select single screens in Maharashtra but overall is poor especially in the the Delhi/Punjab area.

Khichdi grossed around 3.25 crore nett in its first week but business was mainly from the Gujarat belt where the film is a hit and performed even better than the much bigger films Anjaana Anjaani and Robot. [/b]
