Bollywood stars are usually useless sons, nephews: adman Comments

Mumbai, Oct 26 (IANS) Mumbai Film Festival continues to throw up lively debates. Taking a jibe at the way Bollywood works, perennially smiling adman Prahlad Kakkar had the audience in splits when he said the industry is a mom and pop shop.

'Why use a good actor when you can have a nephew? And if you have to create stars anyway, why not from the family? It is hence very difficult for men to become stars. But since Bollywood does not want their women to be in films, females have a better chance of becoming stars or starlets. Men stars are usually useless nephews and sons,' he said at a forum.

Taking an open shot at the young Bachchan scion, Kakkar said, 'Abhishek Bachchan has 17 flops in a row and is still going strong. He is unique and should be in the Guinness Book of Records,' much to uproarious laughter from the gathering.

  1. Sad state but this thing is prevalent everywhere. Be it Politics, business or other simpler walks of life. I am not sure it helps with success through out but yes the threshold is crossed easily which is difficult for average person.

  3. Zarine Khan got Veer, Sonakshi got Dabangg, whats the big deal?

  4. Actresses have a bigger chance of breaking in anyway because film families know how the industry is and usually don't want their girls acting in it.

Any idiot related to the film industry can get a few easy chances and if they are at least half decent, they can stick around for a long time. The problem is that someone without connections can't even get that one chance. You have to be extraordinary in some way without having the right last name. Akshay had great looks, martial arts ability, and OFC a lot of luck. SRK had tremendous charisma and audience connect.

Look at the star kids. Imran is one of the most terrible actors around and Ranbir is really strange and goofy looking but the goodwill Rishi Kapoor and Aamir Khan get for them can at least get them a few chances to show they can lead a movie. Abhishek would not have been able to even get his foot in the door with less than average looks and horrible acting for a good 6-7 years straight!

  6. I would take Sonakshi over Zarine ANYDAY. Sonakshi has unusual sultry looks and is not just a plump wannabe white girl.

  7. Just because Zarine is fair-skinned doesn't make her a wannabe white girl. She can't help her resemblance to Katrina and her first role was nothing like the Zara Zara Kiss Me Kiss Me type of roles Kat generally does either. However, without looking like Kat's double, she would have never gotten into Bollywood, just like that Sneha Ullal that looked like Ash. I really don't think she will get another movie anyway.

Sonakshi is quite big and fat or you can say big-boned and with the emphasis on skinny models with no talent (Deepika, Sonam, etc) lately, I don't think she would have gotten any chance either without her BW connections. I don't see her lasting long either, to be honest. She would look really big next to the other male actors. Imagine her with someone like Imran Khan... she would look like she can crush him, not that that would be a bad thing. :-P

  8. Zarine is the huge girl who would crush anyone standing next to her. So it was her fair skin and slight Kat-ness that got her the role.

Sonakshi has a brother too and he came in a film with a whole lot of "stars", so we will have to wait and see who is riding and nepotism and who may have some innate talent.

  10. "so we will have to wait and see" - this is what I wrote..... No one is calling any newbie's career based on one film.
