The awards are making news today!

Bored of run of the mill Bollywood awards that seem mostly fixed?  Then a new movement started on Twitter to make the ‘tweeple’ choose their own film awards is just for you.

“It all started as a rant against Bollywood film awards and their questionable nominees and winners,” says Somen Mishra, a journalist and a co-founder of ‘Tweeple film awards’ along with HT journalist Nikhil Taneja.  Within a few days of being announced, the awards already have hundreds of followers on twitter and fans on facebook. Giving an insight into the process of selection, Mishra says, “We have 20 noted film critics, 8 top music critics already as part of the jury. Further,  55 popular Bollywood bloggers also stand a chance to be in the jury, through a voting process. Once the jury decides the nominees for various categories, anyone on twitter can cast a vote to select the winners.”

Celebrities like Gul Panag, Ranvir Shorey, Shreya Ghoshal, Shweta Pandit, Anurag Kashyap and Mallika Sherawat have already tweeted their support for the Twi-Fi awards.”

And more news here!

Bollywood stars are not the only ones upset when they don’t win awards for their films, just ask ex-journo Nikhil Taneja.

His tweet bitching out film awards and their nominations found an unprecedented response. “All I said is that maybe we should have an award of our own, and I received some 10 to 15 replies. I took it forward and asked  what we should call it,” says Nikhil. Overnight, Tweeple awards was coined and it topped the trending list in India.

A week hence, Tweeple or twi_fi_awards (it’s twitter handle) has close to 1500 followers and the number keeps increasing. The rise of the awards has been organic and shows the potential of social media. A tweet to cult blog writer Somen Mishra of moifightclub was the turning point. Somen asked renowned critics to tweet about the awards and it became an instant hit.

“It’s off to a flying start. I didn’t even expect 100 people. It took me a couple of years to get 1000 followers on my account. I think getting that number in five days is impressive. I thought I was the only nut who cared so much about an undeserving film or actor getting nominated, but it seems like there are many others out there,” says Nikhil.
