After Peepli Live, Aamir Khan looks forward to the release of Delhi Belly as well as Dhobi Ghat.

But what about his big acting assignment? Yash Chopra has approached Aamir with a subject called FBI. The film is said to be a biggie and is about a secret service agent kind of a story. In Yash Chopra’s last film SRK played a lover who was arrested in Pakistan after being framed as a secret agent. So this time around Chopra is ensuring that he has a spy as a protagonist with no pretensions and tensions.

Before flying off to Los Angeles (where he will be joined by Raj Kumar Hirani and Aamir Khan) to finalise scripts for his next three films — Ferrari Ki Sawari, Munna Bhai Chale Amrika and Broken Horses, Vinod sheds light on some current issues.

Is it true that you have put up counting machines in your office because mega-bucks are pouring in?
Nahin yaar. From Khamosh to 3 Idiots, I have always made cinema only when I have a good story to tell. Sometimes the films have made big money-like the Munna Bhai series or 3 Idiots, sometimes the films have failed... like Kareeb and Eklavya. However, my objective in making a film has never been to count the money at the end of it. We only make cinema if we have a good story to tell.

Now that Aamir Khan and you are joined at the hip will he be in Munna Bhai Chale Amrika?
I have been asked this question. But honestly I don’t know the answer to this yet. I like Aamir, I believe he also likes me, but we have to co-exist. Someone asked me yesterday if Aamir was my 3 am friend? I was pleasantly surprised. I think Aamir and I should keep a distance. We should not ruin what we have between us by working too much together.

So will Sanjay Dutt continue being the much-loved Munna bhai?
Raju Hirani, Abhijaat Joshi and I still have to lock the script of our third part of this series. Once we do that we will start casting. Chances are that Sanjay will be Munna bhai. Or we may cast a much younger actor.

He quit studies after Class XII at Mumbai's N.M. College much to his parents' horror, choosing to work as an assistant director for four years. After his pin-up worthy debut in 1988, he wept every day coming home from work, convinced that the nine films he had signed in a rush would crash his career. Then in 2002, after he separated from Reena, his wife of 16 years, he drank a bottle of Bacardi every day for a year-and-a-half, except for the six hours a week and every alternative weekend he would see his children. Not what you would call the perfect ingredients for success. But Aamir Hussain Khan, all 44 years and 5 ft 7 inches of him, his wife's diamond studs twinkling in ears pierced for Lagaan, has always swum against the tide.

Only now the tide seems to be swimming with him. He's just starred in 3 Idiots, a film that has been breaking box office records at home and abroad, making Rs 240 crore in 10 days and still counting. His last four films, released over three successive years, Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Taare Zameen Par and Ghajini, made a collective box office revenue of over Rs 590 crore. He makes an average of Rs 10 crore a year from each of the six brands he endorses. The way he marketed Ghajini will now be taught as part of a course in film marketing at IIM-Ahmedabad. The profit he is contemplating from 3 Idiots, as a result of a wise decision to forego his fees and split the profit three ways between producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, director Raju Hirani and himself, will be over Rs 20 crore. But more than that, his films have consistently hit a nerve with audiences, either getting them to participate in candlelight vigils inspired by Rang De Basanti, treat children with greater sensitivity as in Taare Zameen Par or even cause them to bulk up their bodies as in Ghajini.

In an industry ripped apart by camps, he is his own institution, working with untested new directors (Farhan Akhtar in Dil Chahta Hai) and even failed filmmakers (Ashutosh Gowariker, who had two flops behind him, in Lagaan). He's been a producer for the smash hit Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na which starred his nephew and made Rs 115 crore at the box office, a director for Taare Zameen Par and even the unofficial CEO of Ghajini Inc. He shuns the awards circus and has never been seen in public performing song and dance routines. Yet his decision to act in one movie at a time is now a mass mantra and a sure career cure. His help was sought in resolving the two-month stand-off with multiplexes last year. And equally, his move to not charge a fee for 3 Idiots could set off a trend of stars putting their talent where their mouth is in these leaner, meaner times.

Yet as he sits folded up in his favourite chair in the projection room of his home, two floors below his mother's home where he was born and brought up, it is hard to think of the word superstar. He exudes an aura, but the room is more suited to that of a messy student, with books such as Katherine Frank's Indira to Abraham Verghese's The Tennis Partner sharing shelf space with PC games and Bob Dylan and Sufi qawwali CDs. The make-up room is stacked with the tools of his trade, from spare costumes to a wigmaker's dummy. And the terminal above his computer has chronologically labelled scripts. The actor himself is on his fourth coffee, talking about how he lost weight for his role of Rancho in 3 Idiots, which director Rajkumar Hirani rewrote for Khan. He speaks of how he modelled the 17-year-old on the boyish director of Ghajini, A.R. Murugadoss, and his 14-year-old nephew Pablo, who can never sit still. He jumps up to demonstrate, as he often does in his exuberance, contorting his body like an over-active teenager. "But Rancho was also dangerous because he is without a flaw. The audience's heart doesn't go out to such a guy. So I made him curious rather than cocky," he says.

3 Idiots: Aim excellence, saali success jhakk maar ke aayegi

I am (Shahrukh) Khan fan, and I liked 3 Idiots. OK, make it loved.

When we saw 2 of the biggest stars of our generation trying to do this movie, we knew that there has to be something special in it, and sure there was, too bad only one could do it, saala, lucky dog (no pun intended). Is it best of the decade, best ever? I have no idea, I have never ever been a good judge of movie, I liked Race after all. But then for me core of every movie lies in the "fun" factor, entertainment value, and then if you sprinkle enough of, what you call, "message", it becomes a movie not to be missed. In this regard, folks, 3I is a darn good one.

Coming to the movie, yes, jahapanah gag is overdone a bit, and caricatures don't exist in real. But then its not about that, right? Its about having fun while watching a movie, and take something along with you, if you can, which can be a joke, smile, or just a simple thought. Yes, every movie has a message, message of peace over war, love over hatred, freindship over animosity, and this movie has its fair share of points as well, which it tries to get across the table, but there are not many which puts in the way 3I does. If the movie is not entertaining enough, I think that whatever "message" it has is lost, and 3I has enough of funny, jokes, and punch lines, even though with the help of caricatures and gags, that never for once you feel that you are being preached or bored.

I have seen so many times how such and such movie's script is discussed as coursework for some college or something, this is one movie I would definitely want to be shown to every student out there. And see, its not about changing the system, like many would like you to believe, even VVC, its about changing your mentality, which in turn can change the system. How parents don't guide, but "force" them to walk on the path they think is right for them, sometimes by force, sometimes by emotional blackmailing of sorts. At the same time its a lesson to kids to try and learn for the sake of learning, not passing. Aim should be attaining the excellence, not degree. Degree might land you a job, nice car, bigger house, but success, the real big success, comes with excellence. Do not compete others, but aim to be excellent in what you are doing. If you are making a blog, don't try to outdo someone else's try to make your own so good that it gets the notice by itself. What a movie, what a motivation it can give to students trying real hard to make their name in this rat race of sorts.

It depends upon you what point you bring home, the loud, repetitve, stupid line, aal izz well, or the the point about doing what you love and loving what you do. After all, you are the viewer, you take the call. As such i am seldom interested in BO stuff, but this movie should break all the record, and deservingly. Big star, good movie, great marketing, has all the components right, hope it does that. This is a true DDLJ moment for Aamir, I don;t htink Ghajini ever was, but this sure is.

Performance wise, Aamir made the character his own, though some times he did look like forcing himself to be a kid, like when Boman is dragging him. But all in all, he nails it, the way he talks, reassures and motivate his friends and audience, is really worth watching. Maddy, Sharman are good in whatever is given to them, which is not exactly much. Loved the scnes of Sharman's family, how they were done in humor, amazing. Kareena is almost non existent. Lot has been said about Boman, but I think he did pretty good, like all Hirani movies, he was a caricature once again, and he did pretty well as that caricature. Gave laughs, played a bad guy, but still never a villain. I am not saying that the plot doesn't have loopholes, or its own fair share of unbelievable ridiculousness, but it is more to make the movie more entertaining, which it does. Also, I am sorry, I am not exactly an Oscar jury, and that too for a reason. I look for entertainment in the movie. Neither was I judging some Science journal that I comment on feasibility of a vacuum cleaner as a suction cup.

Yes, 3I is a collection of Munnabhais, TZP, at some points, even Mohabbatein. but it is a novel effort, and a good movie with enough of fun to make ou remember the point of " Attain Excellence, success saali jhakk maar ke aayegi".

My rating? Catch is as soon as possible, and show it to kids, and tell them how important it is to take interest in what they are doing, and do what they have interest in. Lets have few more Abdul Kalams than Kunals.

Am I making any sense? I hope I am.

Three Idiots, Two Stars, One Missed Opportunity

In Rajkumar Hirani's [ Images ] latest film, a character steps to a blackboard and chalks up, for the benefit of a befuddled engineering college classroomful of students, the word 'Farhanitrate,' daring them to tell him what it means.

The word is a pun on the character's best friend, Farhan, and while it may be a non-existant gag word in the film, the compound seems to exist in real life -- Hirani's film is doused liberally with Farhanitrate (in an Akhtar sense of the word) and several other directorial scents -- including Hirani's own touch, which is why by the time the end credits eventually roll around, you have a 'been there, sniffed that' feeling about it all.

There's also a tragic, overriding feeling of futility. Why, you ask yourself, does a college film have to be made with middle-aged men playing the lead? Can we not trust younger actors to deliver, or has the insecurity of the star system blinded us to all reality?

Why must Aamir Khan [ Images ], a man who told us of the last day of college 21 years ago, still play a fresh-faced student? He does adequately, and is impressively bereft of age-lines, but we really have seen it all before. For the actor, it's probably yet another disguise, that of the young man. But it's a role he can do in his sleep.

Ditto for Hirani and his partner in wordplay, Abhijat Joshi. 3 Idiots is a very average bit of fluffy Bollywood masala that tragically pretends, at times, to be making a profound point, one it loses in repetition. The result is a confused film, one that doesn't know exactly where it stands, torn between lump-in-the-throat filmmaking and amateurishly written juvenilia. There are a few moments which click, but coming from the duo that created the finest film this decade, this is a massive letdown.

'I want everyone to watch my film' - Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan employs a different marketing strategy for each of his films, and they never fail to work.

To promote this Friday's release 3 Idiots, Aamir 'disappeared' for a couple of days and traveled all over India in various disguises.

Three days before the film's release, Aamir made his appearance again, and spoke at length about his memorable experiences and India tour. Patcy N took notes:

Whose idea was this 'disappearing act'?

Mine. But it was implemented by many people. They had a code name for me called Phantom and the operation was called Operation Spiderman. We started preparing for it four months in advance.

How was your journey?

It was very exciting. I had an amazing experience in every state -- from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. I met many people and learnt about their problems, aspirations and day-to-day issues.

This game had different layers. Firstly, it was a marketing strategy for 3 Idiots, as it is connected to the story. In the film, my character Rancho disappears and his friends have to search for him. So we thought we should market the film in such a way that I go missing and my audience goes searching for me. Wherever I went, I made friends and gifted them gold rings. I have invited them to the premiere of 3 Idiots.

Secondly, it was only a marketing strategy. I wanted to connect with common people. Usually, when I visit the different parts of India, people know me and treat me like an actor. But here, nobody recognised me. People treated me like a common man and that was a new experience for me.

The third layer of this trip was that I wanted to throw light on certain issues in the country. I went to Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, a place where weavers live. Two years ago, I heard it was a dying profession and that they were running into losses. I wanted to highlight their problems and request people to wear hand-woven clothes as much as possible.

Likewise, I wanted to highlight the problem of education. So I went to Gujarat where the education system is good. There is free education in small schools up to Standard Seven.

How much of this will help the film?

I don't know that. But I liked the idea and its various layers.

I have invited them to the premiere of 3 Idiots.

Secondly, it was only a marketing strategy. I wanted to connect with common people. Usually, when I visit the different parts of India, people know me and treat me like an actor. But here, nobody recognised me. People treated me like a common man and that was a new experience for me.

The third layer of this trip was that I wanted to throw light on certain issues in the country. I went to Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, a place where weavers live. Two years ago, I heard it was a dying profession and that they were running into losses. I wanted to highlight their problems and request people to wear hand-woven clothes as much as possible.

Likewise, I wanted to highlight the problem of education. So I went to Gujarat where the education system is good. There is free education in small schools up to Standard Seven.

How much of this will help the film?

I don't know that. But I liked the idea and its various layers.

One of the most remarkable quote I ever read:


The other day there was a story in the paper of a girl who had jumped off the 19th floor when her mother was in another room and I told my wife that if this kid had seen 3 Idiots, she wouldn’t have jumped. I genuinely feel that if I had released this film a month ago, I could have saved that one life. I think 3 Idiots will save lives.
