Where are they now?

Sorry for the ominous title. It's usually reserved for finding celebs who've disappeared for the last 20-30 years. It's equally apt, however, for what's happening to some of the biggest female stars of recent times.

On the heels of Aishwarya Rai announcing that she is on the verge of signing films with Shyam Benegal and Raj Kumar Santoshi, one wonders what's happening to the actresses who once used to go toe to toe with Aishwarya. (or beat her, for that matter)

At nearly 40, Aishwarya is going from strength to strength. Most of her movies may flop but then so do the current hotties' films like Kareena Kapoor. Hits and flops have never been a big deal for actresses. Career prospects are determined by the level of films you get and which big directors and male actors are connected to them. With the likes of Mani Rathnam, Ashutosh Gowariker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali all working with her in recent times, she is on a career high.

Why then have Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta been nearly obliterated? To be fair to Rani, she is currently filming a small movie called No One Killed Jessica with Vidya Balan. It could very well lead to her comeback but chances look dim. Rani has frozen out the media and slunk into the shadows with her beau Aditya Chopra. On the other hand, she will always have the Yash Raj Banner to create projects for her. Too bad their latest ventures tend to be garbage like Dil Bole Hadippa and Ta Ra Ra Rum. There was another stinker called Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic. What Rani needs desperately is thoda luck.

At least she is one step above Preity Zinta who has had a colossal fall. From starring opposite King Khan and Junior Bachchan in Kank and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, she has almost nothing to show for herself in 3-4 years. She has gotten so desperate she spreads rumors about all the films she's signed. In every interview, one hears how she has two films signed and she will start filming after IPL, before IPL, during IPL. Periodically she gives interviews to say the same things. And how does she spend her time? Partying and getting botox and maybe surgical help as well. See for yourself and decide.

With Sonam Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra showing their ability to single-handedly open movies and Deepika Padukon on the rise along with budding starlets like Anushka Sharma and now Sonakshi Sinha, how long before Aishwayra too has to make way? How long will she be able to hang on? Or will all these models disappear after their flavor of the month status is over?

  1. For some reason BW has always neglected actresses, and its a fair bit of observation, Nia, that Aishwarya is perhaps the most successful Bachachan of thebrand Bachchan. But how many articles about her we read on movie blogs?

Honestly, I think Aish is the best out there, she looks great, she acts well. Much better than most of the actresses around.

I think Sonam Kapoor did what no actress did in last so many years after Madhuri, she actually carried a heroine centric movie, and not just as a actress, but as the face of the project. Even Madz movies like Beta, Raja were never marketed as heroine centric movies, Aisha was, and she got her second hit in the process. Not a mean feat.

Deepika really is on a high, her movies may or may not be working, but she is featuring in big projects that no one can deny. Though she has to make a mark with big directors, but then that happens with time and/or last name.

Priyanka Chopra though has definitely been pushed aside, she has a TV show coming up, her only highlight at the moment, hope she picks up.

Kareena Kapoor I hate, but she has also been missing from the celluloid, though I don't really miss her.

Katrina is the only name which is getting work and defying all odds, she is working like a charm. How many heroines had her hit ration? Or for that matter, how many heroes?
