The enigma of Talaash – Reema Kagti’s next with Aamir Khan

Everything about this film is shrouded in smoke – Dhuaan was a very apt early rumored title that has now been changed to Talaash. Written by Reema Kagti (director of Excel Entertainment’s Honeymoon Travels) and Zoya Akhtar (writer and director of Luck by Chance and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara), the film boasts of an interesting cast with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor (last seen in 3 Idiots) but also includes Rani Mukherjee. Rani and Aamir were last seen together in Mangal Pandey years ago!
So what to we know about Talaash? The earlier Dhuaan suggests events clouded in mystery, fog. Aamir plays a cop named Surjan Singh Sekhawat and Kareena is called Sunaina, and is allegedly a sex-worker (as per Mid-Day). In a recent interview with Verve magazine this is what we learnt:

….. Kagti has been refining her suspense drama about a police investigation in Mumbai with Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji as the cast. Slated for a 2012 release, the word on the street is that the real star of the film is its script.
“Zoya (Akhtar) and I thought of the story and co-wrote it. We do a lot of writing together. We’re also best friends so it’s fun and there’s a huge comfort factor. All our creative arguments get resolved by who can bang her laptop harder on the other one’s head,” she says, grinning wickedly.

So is she intimidated to be directing an institution like Aamir Khan? “I’m not fazed at all, just extremely grateful to Aamir and the producers for this opportunity to make a film in a really nice way. Aamir has got a lot of foresight and is very interested in the well-being of the project. I really appreciate that and don’t see that as interference. Having said that, even if the situation gets challenging, I like challenges.”

Sukanya Venkatraghavan Filmfare unrated There is courage in Vidya’s frumpiness (was so much of it necessary though) and audacity in Rani’s understanding of her character. They pull out all stops.
Gaurav malani TOI unrated Rajkumar Gupta shows absolute conviction in bringing to life one of the most significant murder-case convictions in the history of India. No one miss this cinema!

Savera Someshwar rediff.com 3.5/5 It's because this film could have been 'something more.' For example, there are people who will love Rani Mukerji in this film, but both her character and her performance could have been better.
Nikhat Kazmi Times of India 4/5 The film has an impeccable first half and could do with some editing in the second half. But the high drama, the arresting performances and the spunky audio track (Amit Trivedi) make NOKJ a memorable viewing. 
Anupama Chopra NDTV 3/5 This uneasy mix of truth and creative license; subtle notes and heavy-handedness make for an uneven film that in places seems stretched unnecessarily. That said, No One Killed Jessica is several notches ahead of the tripe we’ve been subjected to in theatres lately.

Sorry for the ominous title. It's usually reserved for finding celebs who've disappeared for the last 20-30 years. It's equally apt, however, for what's happening to some of the biggest female stars of recent times.

On the heels of Aishwarya Rai announcing that she is on the verge of signing films with Shyam Benegal and Raj Kumar Santoshi, one wonders what's happening to the actresses who once used to go toe to toe with Aishwarya. (or beat her, for that matter)

At nearly 40, Aishwarya is going from strength to strength. Most of her movies may flop but then so do the current hotties' films like Kareena Kapoor. Hits and flops have never been a big deal for actresses. Career prospects are determined by the level of films you get and which big directors and male actors are connected to them. Rani Mukherjee, Vidya Balan to star in a movie on the Jessica Lall murder case

Aamir director Rajkumar Gupta, who won accolades for his unconventional maiden film featuring television's blue-eyed boy Rajeev Khandelwal, is gearing up for his next film with UTV. This one is tentatively called No One Killed Jessica.
And there is some exciting news on his second film's front. A source reveals that two major actresses -- Bong beauty Rani Mukherjee and Paa actress Vidya Balan -- are all set to play the lead roles in the film.

The two heroines were earlier supposed to team up in Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunri Mein Daag.
Unfortunately, things didn't work out with Vidya then. However, this time the actresses stand a good chance of being reteamed.

Apparently, Kareena Kapoor was Gupta's first choice for one of the roles but it didn't work out. The source informs, "Creatively, the cast is finalised, but UTV is still negotiating with the actresses on the money factor.
Both the actresses have quoted a very high price. Vidya is to play someone closely affected by the crime, while Rani plays a fiery journalist."

Gupta, who is filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's protégé, has revealed in an earlier interview that, No One Killed Jessica is set in Delhi. "Unlike Aamir, this film will have two-three strong female characters. It is inspired by the real life murder of Jessica Lal but it's not entirely based on that," he then said.

On being quizzed about Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee being the two leading ladies in the film, Gupta revealed reluctantly, "I am in the process of finalising my cast but I won't comment on it now. The film is going on the floors soon and will be produced by UTV. We are going to make a formal announcement very soon."
