Roger Ebert's 100 Great Moments in the Movies

100 Great Moments in the Movies

-gone.jpg

Roger Ebert / April 23, 1995

For the centennial of cinema, 100 great moments from the movies:
Clark Gable in "Gone With the Wind":
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
Buster Keaton standing perfectly still while the wall of a house falls over upon him; he is saved by being exactly placed for an open window.
Charlie Chaplin being recognized by the little blind girl in "City Lights."
The computer Hal 9000 reading lips, in "2001: a Space Odyssey."
The singing of "La Marseillaise" in "Casablanca."

Aamir Khan-Yash Chopra: FBI

After Peepli Live, Aamir Khan looks forward to the release of Delhi Belly as well as Dhobi Ghat.

But what about his big acting assignment? Yash Chopra has approached Aamir with a subject called FBI. The film is said to be a biggie and is about a secret service agent kind of a story. In Yash Chopra’s last film SRK played a lover who was arrested in Pakistan after being framed as a secret agent. So this time around Chopra is ensuring that he has a spy as a protagonist with no pretensions and tensions.

Cricket = WWE

For a nation marred by allegations of nuclear proliferation, largest exporter of terrorism, hideout of Osama Bin Laden, Dawood Ibrahim, a nation on the verge of being declared as a failed state, and right now 100s of 1000s of flood victims, latest controversy actually dosn't sound too bad. But if we see the larger picture, can you actually trust one soul out there wearing Paki/Indian or any shirt for that matter, that he/she is playing FOR the nation?

The Ugly Truth

by Seema Goswami

Would you sign up for a dating site that announced proudly that it was meant for the 'aesthetically challenged'? Which was called TheUglyBugBall.co.uk and abbreviated to the very appropriate-sounding acronym TUBB? And which declared proudly on its home page, “If you are one of the millions of people who don’t like what they see in the mirror, then this is the place for you!”

Well, when they put it as charmingly as that, who could possibly resist? And certainly, there seem to be lot of people who have posted their pictures – some frankly ugly, some less so – on the site but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out if it was for real or just one big wind-up.

Take these sample quotes from the home page: “Instead of fishing in a small pool of prettiness and getting nowhere, dive into an ocean of uglies and have more choice”; “a recent TUBB survey also proved that they (ugly people) try harder in bed”; or even “once with an ugly partner it is unlikely that anyone will try and take them from you meaning you can let yourself go completely once you are together”. I mean, this has to be someone taking the mickey out of those with self-esteem issues. Surely, all these people who sign up looking for love, romance (or a particular favourite: ‘anything’) on this site cannot be serious? But when you think about it, the site is only saying upfront what the rest of us don’t have the courage to acknowledge (except maybe in the privacy of our own hearts and minds).

The truth is that pretty people like to date other pretty people. Good-looking folk tend to marry other good-looking folk. Beauty gravitates towards beauty. Look around you. The odds are that you will find that the couples around you are well-matched in terms of attractiveness. The beautiful women tend to be paired with handsome men. The merely pretty have to make do with those who could be described as attractive. And those who aren’t at all physically appealing end up with other aesthetically challenged people.

Ashayein, Hello Darling Box Office

Looks whos leading the new releases in India: and I swear its not a surprise

The new releases, notable among them being Percept's AASHAYEIN and Mukta Arts' HELLO DARLING, opened to poor houses. The opening and noon shows ranged from bad to dismal. However, AVATAR, which has been revived in theatres with never-before-seen footage, had a better start than all Hindi films and is expected to be the first choice of moviegoers this weekend.

Yash Chopra admits AB/Rekha affair

The BBC Asian Network managed to a pull a coup of sorts when it aired an interview with legendry filmmaker Yash Chopra who confirmed one of the most infamous affairs in Bollywood.

In the interview on Sonia Deol's show on Wednesday 11th August (listen to clip below), Yash Chopra spoke openly about the Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha affair in the late 70s / early 80s. It's the first time since the affair that a person of Yash Chopra's stature has spoken so candidly about it.

He said the affair was definitely going on before he started work on 'Silsila', which coincidentally mirrored what was happening in real life. Yash said, "I was always on tenterhooks and scared (during Silsila) because it was real life coming into reel life. Jaya is his wife and Rekha is his girlfriend – the same story is going on (in real life). Anything could have happened because they are working together."

Yash said that 'Silsila' was not inspired by the infamous affair; even though the movie was released post the controversy. He further added that he was only able to complete the film (despite the rising tensions) because he had good relations with the cast. "I cast them because they are great actresses, not because of what was going on. I felt lucky to get them."

Even now, the Bachchan clan is remaining tight-lipped about what really happened, so no doubt this public revelation on the BBC Asian Network will cause embarrassment to the family.

Yash said, "When a man and woman are doing romantic scenes it's not possible they won't get in a relationship – in the past it wasn't so open, but today it is. No one cared in the past."

Britain's popular Asian weekly, Eastern Eye has also covered this story. Earlier this week, showbiz editor, Asjad Nazir tweeted that the filmmaker and the BBC Asian Network had betrayed Amitabh Bachchan for exposing the affair.

Some suggested that Amitabh had met in an angry exchange with the BBC Asian Network for broadcasting the interview, however the station denied this. It said, "Following the interview with Yash Chopra on the BBC Asian Network's Sonia Deol Show on Wednesday 11 August, we have had no contact or correspondence from Amitabh Bachchan's representatives."

However, host Sonia Deol expressed her surprise at Yash's revelation, "It's a rumour we have grown up with, but no one has ever confirmed it," Sonia told Eastern Eye.

Bebo in chaddis!

Karan Johar
Karan Johar
WhenKareena Kapoor returns from the schedule of Agent Vinod in Latvia around mid September, she has a lot of cleaning up to do. Her best friend, filmmaker Karan Johar, who loves Bebo to distraction, has ordered her to empty her wardrobe.

Karan jokes, “I have asked her to throw out all her old clothes and fill her wardrobe with chaddis (he means shorts) and other skimpy outfits. She has to sport a short haircut and I also want her to try and get herself into a size minus (not a size zero) because she has to match Imran Khan perfectly for my film tentatively titled Short Term Shaadi.”

Post Diwali, Bebo may actually think of making a trip to Paris and London accompanied by designer Manish Malhotra to get herself a totally new wardrobe that will consist of LBDs, chaddis and other equally seductive clothes.

Facebook Feels Unfriendly Toward Film It Inspired - New York Times

Antoine Antoniol/Bloomberg News, left; Merrick Morton/Columbia Pictures
Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, left, is portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, right, in “The Social Network.” Mr. Zuckerberg says “the movie is fiction.”

LOS ANGELES — At the New York Film Festival next month, Hollywood will unleash “The Social Network,” a biting tale of the Silicon Valley giant Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Now Facebook must decide whether to bite back.
After fretting for months over how to respond, the company appears to have decided that its best bet is to largely ignore the movie and hope that audiences do the same — that “The Social Network” will be another failed attempt to bottle a generation, like “Less Than Zero,” and not culturally defining, as it aspires to be, in the way of “Wall Street” or “The Big Chill.”

August 23rd, 2010

The film was originally made by Gulzar and written by Khwaja Ahmed Abbas. Gulzar has already given the go ahead and is excited about the remake of the movie. In fact, Gulzar will be chipping in with lyrics, dialogue and screenplay. At the moment, Sircar is busy looking for a girl to play the lead. The only actor that is finalised is Upen Patel, who will play an army man. The film will go on the floors in November.
Meanwhile, Sircar’s recent venture, Shoe Bite, that was retitled Johnny Mastana, with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead, has not yet been released even though the shooting is complete. Whether Abhishek will reprise Vinod Khanna’s role, remains to be seen.

Emraan Hashmi snaps impatiently at the reporter. He has just been asked to confirm a national daily’s report about underworld threats over the phone forcing him to change his number. At the moment, this bit of news is not Hashmi’s only connection to the underworld. He is also playing the role of a gangster in his new film, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. “Please don’t speculate and blow things out of proportion. I have temporarily switched off my mobile and will reconnect it soon,” he says. It’s a cryptic no-answer for a good reason—the news is planted but he does not want to commit an outright lie.

Salman and Kat finally Split?

salman khan|katrina kaif

I am single, says Salman
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif have broken up, if Salman was serious in a recent TV interview .

Salman said in the interview, “I’ve broken up with Katrina. We were friends then for everybody, we are friends now... Koi cheez tootati hai toh isliye kyonki ya toh different ways chali gayi, ya ek shakhs ki growth nahin hui, ya ek ne kuch aur path chun liya, ya sensibility samajh mein nahi aati ... It’s just people not getting along, something that doesn’t end peacefully. But if you can manage to stay friends, there’s nothing like it.”

Sholay, the Beginning

Hindi cinema’s biggest blockbuster officially completes 35 years this 15 August, but it was actually born in 1973 in a small room. Screenplay writer Salim Khan remembers how Sholay was conceived.

It took us a month to write Sholay in a small room laid with white
mattresses that served as the Sippy story-writing room at their Khar
office.

Midget: My wives maybe Hindu but kids will always follow ONLY Islam

Did you face any religious dilemma while you were married to a Hindu lady Reena Dutta and later on to Kiran Rao?
No, none whatsoever. We never practiced each other's religion neither did we force each other to do so. But, of course, I had made it very clear that my kids will always follow only Islamic religion.

Sonam Kapoor to remake Freaky Friday

Anil Kapoor knows what is best for his daughter Sonam Kapoor. Despite his latest production Aisha having not set the cash registers ringing, Anil is already headlong into his next production, a remake of Hollywood movie Freaky Friday. And freaky it is!

The concerned father has decided to replace the ace director Priyadarshan, who he had initially planned to get onboard to direct this Hollywood remake. Having bought the remake rights of Walt Disney Productions’ Jamie Lee Curtis-Lindsay Lohan starrer Freaky Friday, Anil was all charged up to go with Priyadarshan.

Explaining what led to Anil’s decision, our source said, “Anil is very close to Priyan sir and had spoken to him regarding this Hollywood remake. He wanted Priyadarshan to direct this flick for his daughter and wanted to have Kirron Kher in the role of the mother. But Anil changed his mind because he suddenly felt that Priyan Sir wouldn’t be the best choice for Freaky Friday. Anil is looking out for another director to direct Freaky Friday.

The Next Three Days - Official Trailer

A double game no one wants

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara remains unsold, because its producers are strapping it with some dead stock — Is it 'Game' over?

Vickey Lalwani
Posted On Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 02:44:36 AM

Ritesh Siddhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment is playing a dirty double game, which has the industry rather baffled.

Excel Entertainment is insistent that film corporates buy Hrithik-Katrina starrer Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Abhishek-Kangna starrer Game as a twin package deal.

Worse still, Siddhwani is demanding Rs 100 crore (approximately) for the same. The unjustified hubris is proving costly - both Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Game are still unsold.

Mumbai Mirror learns that two leading corporate houses have heard out Siddhwani and not got back to him as yet.

Check out some of the comments - Hilarious

Direction of directors

if we take out Raju Hirani from the equation, 3 of the most talked about diretors in recent times have been:
1) Anurag Kashyap
2) Vishal Bhardwaj
3) Dibakar Banerjee

All three of them have had different level of successes in last few years, but one thing that has been common is critical appreciation that has been bestowed upon them by critics and people who have seen their movies. They all operate with small budget, have really good ear for music, relatively unknown star cast, realistic movies, and in a way they make movies which have real people, not heroes and heroines. I am just going to try to explain what I like and what I do not about each one of them, and who I think is the best among some of the finest directors of India.
