Rahman killed the music in films - Ram Gopal Varma!

Rahman killed the music in films: RGV
By Telugucinema.com | Friday, 30 July , 2010, 09:26
Ram Gopal Varma believes that A R Rahman, Keeravani, Manisharma and Devi Sri Prasad had together buried the music in South India.

Responding to Rana’s comment about Ilayaraja’s soulful music in Chinarayudu, RGV commented that the above music directors killed the music in our films. Interestingly, RGV was to introduce Keeravani as music director with his maiden film, Shiva but later had him on board for Kshanakshanam.

RGV also introduced Manisharma as music director in a Chiranjeevi film but the film dropped off mid-way. And it was with RGV’s Rangeela that Rehman was introduced to Hindi audiences. Yet, Varma believes that these music directors have buried the music and brought importance to sound unlike Ilayaraja. It remains to be seen how these top music directors would react to RGV’s comments.

A Tribute to Ravi Baswani

Thank you for making life seem funnier than it is
Raja Sen salutes the memory of a truly gifted comic actor.
Ravi BaswaniKundan Shah's seminal comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron has a beat -- a dark, chilling beat -- when Ravi Baswani's protagonist Sudhir Mishra, the younger of the two bumbling, idealistic photographers, decides he has had enough damned persecution.
The two heroes have just managed to misplace a corpse, and a local Bombay copper is shoving them around, harassing them just because he can. Something visibly snaps inside Sudhir, his usually twinkling eyes awake with a manic gleam as he raises his heavy all-purpose bag and plods determinedly over to strike the policeman.
The background score gets uncharacteristically intense, and we have a few seconds of potentially genre-switching seriousness before the cop turns around and Baswani, bag held over his head, helplessly and hilariously tries to warble his way out of the moment, breaking into a random, pointedly innocuous and incredibly silly la-la-la.

Dinner for Schmucks review

Dinner for Schmucks (PG-13)
Ebert:

BY ROGER EBERT / July 28, 2010
The truly goofy comes shrouded in innocence. If a man is trying to be goofy, it's just an act that quickly grows old. But if he lacks the slightest notion of his peculiarity, there's the secret. The blissful ignorance of Barry Speck is beyond pitiful and ascends to a kind of nobility. He's one of those who truly doesn't have a clue.

In “Dinner for Schmucks,” a group of arrogant rich men use him as part of an elaborate joke, but the joke is on them. You can't insult a man who is always happy to be just exactly who he is. In the film, the millionaires have a dinner party every year that is a secret joke: Each guest invites another guest who is, whether he realizes it or not, in a contest to determine which guest is the biggest idiot. This is plain cruel.

The Business of Hindi Movies

The Business of Hindi Movies
Cost :
Budget : The Budget of a movie is referred to as the amount of money spent on making the movie, that is the production costs, the actors/performers/music directors and many more personnel involved the whole movie making process. The burden of the Budget cost is taken by the “Producer”.
Now the Producer can either invest his own money, take money from an financier on loan or Partnership.
Also a new trend with the incoming of Corporate is that they might provide the financing of a movie on the behalf of the Producer with profit sharing.
Selling Cost: When the movie is ready then either the Producer can release the movie through the distributors or he can sell the whole Product on a lump sum to an Interested Party.
The Former case is very rarely done nowadays. So, in most cases the Producer can sell the movie on a Premium to an Studio/Corporate.
Thus, the Producer can make an healthy profit even before the movie releases and now the main pressure to recover the investment is on the Party who bought the movie.
The Price which an Studio/Corporate pays to get the movie is called the “Buying Cost” or the “Acquisition Cost”.
Print and Publicity(P&P): On top of the Buying cost, the Corporate/Buyer now also has to invent an significant amount in the Print and Publicity costs of the Movie, to promote it on a wide scale and also to have an extensive release for the movie.
The whole cost/Total cost of the movie is thus, Selling cost+(Print/Publicity).
The above Total Cost is to be recouped by the concerned party by various channels of revenue.
Revenue :
The Revenue Channels for Hindi movies are generally considered as follows:
Indian Theatrical Share: 50%
Overseas Theatrical Share: 20%
Satellite : 20 %
DVD/Music : 10%
Indian Theatrical (Hindi):
The first and the major contributor for the revenue generation is the Indian Theatrical collections.
There are few terms in relation to Indian Theatrical run of Hindi movies:
Gross Collections : Gross is the total amount generated by a movie at ticket counters.
As simple as that.
Entertainment Tax : Most states levy an “entertainment tax” on movies least in India. On an average, across India it’s assumed to be 40%. The following is the general breakdown across the nation :

Nett Collections : After the entertainment tax is deducted from the Gross Collections, what is left is the “nett”. This is the money which is now with the Theatre owners.

How Tom Cruise lost his mojo

By Tom Teodorczuk

At the March premiere of the crude, unashamedly silly, Eighties-set time travel comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, in Los Angeles, an unlikely guest quietly entered the auditorium just before the film started, having bypassed the red carpet.

Tom Cruise, who had arrived with his wife Katie Holmes, wasn’t on the guest list. Even the film’s John Cusack expressed surprise at their presence. Rob Corddry, who also stars in the film, said later that Cruise was constantly texting him during the movie saying how funny he thought it was.

It is highly unusual – almost unprecedented – for Cruise to attend a premiere that he has no connection with. But then these are unusual times for Tom Cruise. He could have been forgiven, while watching the film’s flashbacks, for wishing that he himself could travel back in time to the summer of 2005 and modify his public behaviour. For it was then that Cruise’s image as Hollywood’s most consistently commercial star was shattered.

Daniel Craig to Star in Film Versions of Stieg Larsson Novels

Hollywood adaptations of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and sequels now have a name in the cast!

Remember a few months back when MGM announced that it was putting its James Bond movie franchise on indefinite hold, and some silly blog came up with advice for its star while he waited for the situation to resolve itself? Turns out he didn’t need our help.
Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig, who has played 007 in his last two on-screen adventures, will set aside his license to kill so he can play Mikael Blomkvist in an English-language remake of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” The Hollywood Reporter said. David Fincher (“Fight Club,” “The Social Network”) will direct the movie, adapted from that best-selling thriller by Stieg Larsson, and Mr. Craig has been signed for potential film versions of “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest,” which have also been made into films in Mr. Larsson’s native Sweden. Before you ask, no casting was immediately announced for the all-important role of Blomkvist’s hacker sidekick, Lisbeth Salander.

Is AR Rahman considering quitting Bollywood?????

A.R. Rahman has been considering whether he should quit Bollywood or not to give him more time to focus on his international career.
"The Indian assignments after Slumdog Millioniare have been very time-consuming, especially Raavan where Rahman not only had to do two versions of the music in Hindi and Tamil, but director Mani Ratnam also asked him to give three or four tunes for every lyric before one was selected, " a source revealed.
"The music of Raavan took more time than Rahman could afford, with the result that other Indian assignments primarily Abbas Tyrewala’s untitled John Abraham-Pakhi starrer got left behind.
"Rahman had to continuously keep breaking his international tours and other projects to be home for various reasons, like the music release of Raavan and other things. He has begun to feel that his international career would never take off if he has to keep returning home."

Mel Gibson is the devil

Here's a transcript of what he says in this new tape:

“Did you get my last message about me being a bad father, and Tim being a great dad now?”

Oksana, who does not fight back on the new tape, utters a barely audible “no,” as Gibson continues to rant, hurling some of the most hateful language yet captured on audio.

“You didn’t hear that one?” Mel continues. “Well, you should go and f*ck him (Dalton), you know, you fickle c*nt because I don’t care.”

“The game’s over,” Mel yells. “Okay. The game’s over. Let the new games begin so you can get it on with anybody else and your son can watch it.
“What is it? Number 45 he’s going to have to look at? F*cking good.”

After that repulsive diatribe, Gibson then tells her: “I’m so f*cking sorry I had a child with you.”

“I despise you,” he says with fury in his voice. “I don’t want you back. You have proven yourself to me. You’re not the f*cking woman I want.

“You’re a f*cking fake. You’re a f*cking sham. You don’t know what the f*ck it means to make a man happy. You didn’t make me f*cking happy., I couldn’t make you happy with the BEST I DID FOR ANYBODY, EVER! EVER,” he yells. “You f*cking glum c*nt!”

“You didn’t f*cking crack a smile with the tree ceremony up there, NOTHING! What the f*ck do I have to do. And remember whose f*cking roof you’re under! You ingrate b*tch!”

Review: ‘Khatta Meetha’ fails to set the Box Office on fire

Source: Komal Nahata

Plot: Akshay is a road contractor who dreams big but doesn’t have the resources to realise his dreams. His task becomes all the more difficult because the new municipal commissioner turns out to be his ex-girlfriend, Trisha.
What’s Good: Some comedy sequences, a couple of songs.
What’s Bad: The very convenient screenplay.
Verdict: Khatta Meetha is for the masses and the single-screen audience, not so much for the multiplex audience.
Loo break: A couple of them, post-interval.

Movies that mess with your mind!

In preparation for Inception, Time magazine came out with a list of 10 top films that mess with your mind!

1. Last Year at Marienbad
"Didn't we meet at Marienbad last year?" an unnamed man asks an unnamed woman. So begins one of the most confusing (and frustrating) movies ever made. Two people are at a French château. One says they know each other. The other denies it. Back and forth they go, over and over, while director Alain Resnais' camera endlessly stalks the château's spooky corridors. All the while, organ music blasts out at unpredictable moments. Some well-dressed people stand in a sunlit garden. They cast shadows. The triangle-shaped trees surrounding them do not. There appears to be no plot. It's all very dreamlike. What is this movie about?

2. Memento

Before Christopher Nolan's Inception, there was Memento, a great big puzzle of a movie whose protagonist suffers from short-term-memory loss. With the help of Polaroids, notes and tattoos (give him credit, the man is dedicated), Leonard Shelby tries to track down his wife's murderer, known only as "John G." As he tries to piece everything together, so does the audience, which sees much of the action as fragments shown in reverse chronological order. We alternate between black-and-white and color, forward movement and back, truth and lies. Leonard doesn't know whom to trust ... and neither do we.

3. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi classic had apes, astronauts (some hibernating), a mysterious monolith — and HAL, a talking computer. Despite the presence of a verbally active machine, there isn't much dialogue in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The emphasis is on the visuals, whose grandiosity is matched only by the film's symphonic soundtrack. As TIME noted when the movie came out — in suitably trippy and pre-moon-landing 1968 — "Kubrick turns the screen into a planetarium gone mad and provides the viewer with the closest equivalent to psychedelic experience this side of hallucinogens." The film, based on a short story by Arthur C. Clarke, won an Oscar for visual effects.

4. El Topo

TIME's 1971 review of Chilean-Russian director Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo (The Mole) described the allegorical cult western film as "a vivid if ultimately passionless passion play." The film's 1970 trailer proclaimed, "It is a mystic film. It is tender. It is sexual." It is also a bit strange. A mysterious cowboy kills a group of outlaws before abandoning his naked son to ride off with a woman. El Topo (played by Jodorowsky) then embarks on a series of bizarre adventures. He challenges and defeats the four great gun masters of the land and then is betrayed by a woman with a man's voice who shoots him, leaving stigmata wounds. After El Topo heals and finds religious enlightenment, he begins an affair with a dwarf woman and helps a group of outcasts escape from a subterranean prison, only to see them massacred by cultists. That's when things really get weird. El Topo was a cult favorite at midnight showings in New York City before finally being released on DVD in 2007.

5. Pi

Maximillian Cohen is a mathematician burdened by crippling social anxieties and an all-consuming belief in the power of his science. As he's about to discover a singular mathematical solution to the patterns of the universe (or so he believes), Cohen falls prey to the schemes of a clutch of cutthroat Wall Street bankers and a sect of Hasidic Jewish Kabbalists, both keen to profit from his revelation. What follows in Darren Aronofsky's black-and-white meta-thriller is a hallucinatory collapse, with an eerie score that sounds out the tormented, psychic depths of a man driven to insanity by his quest for order.

6. The Oeuvre of David Lynch

It's hard to say which of David Lynch's works is the craziest. A profound madness lurks beneath them all, from Eraserhead (1977), his trippy film-school debut, to Blue Velvet (1986) and the Twin Peaks TV series, all the way to Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Dr. (2001) and Inland Empire (2006). Characters in Lynch films hover on the margins of reality, entering, through portal after portal, phantasmagoric dream worlds that are often as unsettling as they are hypnotic. Though Lynch runs a foundation that advocates a brand of popular meditation, there's little that's calming or stable about his vision. Beneath the thin sheen of daily life is an unfathomable, terrifying darkness. That, it seems, is what Lynch repeatedly tries to bring to light.

Peepli Live: Its relevance to India at large.

Tom Cruise: How is he so tall?

Cruise and Cameron Diaz attended the premiere of "Knight and Day" in London on Thursday, and Cruise was almost as tall as Diaz, despite her 4-or-5 inch heels.

Cruise, 5'7, and Diaz, 5'9, posed for photos together and, while he is shorter, the difference was far less the 5 inches it theoretically should be, even with Diaz slightly slouching. Cruise's boots appear to have a one-inch heel on the outside, but his knees are at about the same height as Diaz's.

How'd he do it? Inside lifts? Scroll and decide.

Harry Potter- Deathly Hallows at Comic-Con

Harry Potter's own Draco Malfoy, Tom Felton, made an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con today to introduce footage for the upcoming "Deathly Hallows" films, being released in November and July 2011, respectively. The footage shared played like an extended trailer for the pair of movies and opened with a mirror shard falling to the ground following by a profiled shot of Harry. Voice-over during the shots is Voldemort speaking about the people who have died and those who have suffered as a result of Harry. During the speech, shots of Dumbledore and others. The voice-over closes with Voldemort saying that he will "punish every last man, woman and child that tries to conceal you from me."

Lindsay Turns Jail Stint into Cash Cow

Lindsay Lohan may be behind bars, but she is making more money there than she's made in the last year.

The actress managed to finalize TV and news deals the night before she went off to the clink. Sources tell Fox 411 that she locked down all her tell-all interviews already and she will likely be making seven figures when it is all said and done for her story from jail.

Sylvester Stallone: New world record holder

Good news for Balboa fans. Stallone makes the new world record of making the most famous sports movie ever, yes, ROCKY. Conferred by Guinness Book of World Records during the comic con, this is one more achievement by the star in his illustrious career.

Anurag Kashyap: On the verge of biggest coup of the century?

His first film was almost rejected by the censor board for its bold treatment, his consequent films have lifted the veil of idiocy and rhetoric that are part of Indian films and paens are still being written for his interpretation of India’s cult hero Devdas with his Dev D.

Aamir khan drumming for Peeli, literally

Aamir khan
Aamir Khan literally ‘drummed’ out a surprise for all the high-profile guests and the extensive media guests at the music launch of his co-production with UTV Motion Pictures, the satire Peepli [Live] at a mid-town Mumbai pub on July 13. He himself played – and pretty well too! on the percussion during the performance of the last-presented track, Zindagi se darte ho, performed by the Indian Ocean, one of the five songs on the film’s original soundtrack album. Both his turn at the beats as well as the fact that the song was one of the last renditions of the late Asheem Chakravorty, founder of the band Indian Ocean, who passed away in 2009, made the crowd ask for an encore.

Aamir speaks: I only like my movies

Aamir
Actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan says he enjoys his own movies because they have universal appeal, something that other films lack. "I only like my movies, which are universal like 3 Idiots, Lagaan or Tare Zameen Par. Other people do not believe in making anymore films which are universal  According to me, the only director who caters to the non-multiplex audience is Raju Hirani, others make cinema for cities," Aamir said in an interview on Zee News Celebrity chat show Kahiye Janab to be aired Saturday.

OT: Blonde, blue-eyed baby born to black Nigerian parents!

Off-topic but very interesting -

A Nigerian couple living in the U.K. couldn't believe their eyes when their newborn baby girl was born blonde and blue-eyed. "The first thing I said was, 'What the flip?' " Ben Ihegboro told the U.K's The Sun "We both just sat there after the birth staring at her for ages -- not saying anything."

Ben and Angela Ihegboro named their baby, Nnamchi, meaning "beauty of God" because they believe she is a "miracle baby."

Doctors say they don't believe Nnamchi is albino, although they think she may have a mutated version of the condition. Experts offer two other possible theories: that she might either be the result of a genetic mutation or her parents have a long dead relative with light skin genes.

While baby Nnamchi's Nigerian immigrant parents may not know of any White ancestry, there is still the possibility of it existing in their bloodline. "We are all of us genetic mixtures to some extent, and occasionally you'll have a convergence of the pale versions of these genes in African-Americans and African-Caribbeans who have a mixed black and white ancestry," Oxford University human genetics professor Bryan Sykes told The Sun.

Doctors are also puzzled by baby Nnamchi's blonde hair. "The hair is extremely unusual, said Professor Sykes. "Even many blonde children don't have blonde hair like this at birth."

The Ihegboro's other two children Chisom, 4, and Demebi, 2, bear a striking resemblance to their parents. Angela says big brother Chisom is certainly confused by his beautiful little sister. "Our boy keeps coming to look at his sister and then sits down looking puzzled, she said. "We're a Black family. Suddenly he has a White sister."

Today's 13 Most Irritating Female Celebrities

Once every teenage boy’s greatest fantasy, Britney Spears not only proved herself to be quite a crazy hillbilly, but she also really let herself go. It wasn’t her beautiful singing voice that made her famous, it was the fact that she was super hot, but now she can’t stop shoving Cheetos into her mouth. Normal women don’t have the infinite availability or finances to stay fit with the best in the business, but she can’t be bothered.

This was especially evident when she paraded her bloated belly and cottage cheese butt around the stage while lip-synching in a black bra and panties on the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. In fact, Britney Spears continues to wear clothing that would have fit her perfect in 1998; unfortunately, it’s 2010 and she is now clearly offending public decency laws in 16 U.S. states.

Kristen Stewart compared getting her photograph taken by the paparazzi to getting raped. Need I say more? This miserable actress scoffs at the millions of Twilight fans and consistently speaks negatively of the Twilight franchise, as she clearly deserves more serious dramatic roles. Yeah, she’s the next Meryl Streep, if Meryl Streep was a homely looking chick who couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag. If only the studios would get up the nerve to simply recast her, then the public would never have to set eyes on this ungrateful little ass ever again. And she’s in some serious denial if she thinks anyone would even notice she was missing, not if Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson are still on the screen.

What failed Khatta Meetha

I read quite a few reviews posted here  these are the things which I think people complained about the most

1) Trisha, she seems like one of the major flops of the movie. according to all reviewers though she came late, and has little to do, she failed even in that. May be it was her acting, or the fact that she was in saree, I don;t know, but she was not accepted by anyone.

Saw 3D will be the last movie of the franchise

SAN DIEGO — The only puzzle Jigsaw couldn't solve, it turns out, is time.

After seven movies, more than $730 million in worldwide box office and 30 million DVDs sold, the grisly horror franchise Saw is hanging it up after the final film, Saw 3D, out Oct. 29.

Producers and star Tobin Bell will make the announcement Friday at Comic-Con during the film's footage presentation. "It's time to stop," says Oren Koules, a producer on all the Saw movies. "We have told the story we wanted to tell, and this is going to be a great farewell."

Reactions to Khatta Meetha

Was Inception a grand deception?

I saw Inception on the opening weekend, and found it thoroughly engaging and intelligent. It seemed like there was an open ended ending but the rest was simple enough. It almost seemed like a film that there was no need to review, it was taut, action packed, twisted, but dreaming in a dream about a dream sort of thing is not something I thought I could write a lot about. I had been keeping my head in the sand and avoiding Inception reviews, but now as I caught them I saw furious debate. Critics loved it, hated it, loved other critics who loved it, hated other critics who loved it and so on and so forth. The theories came pouring out of the woodwork and blew my "OK I know what was going on" smugness out of the water. UNLESS one believes that the complexities are being generated by the viewers, and they do not match the maker's intentions.

Salt: Laughter and disappointment

Well ladies and gentlemen; if the CIA, FBI and Secret Service are as incompetent as those portrayed in “Salt,” we may all be in some real danger. They continuously allow Jolie, who plays rogue CIA agent Evelyn Salt, to slip from their grasp on no less than 10 occasions, all more unbelievable than the next.
And, maybe it’s this sheer lack of believability that just sealed the deal on this being one of the most ridiculous movies of the summer. I may not be a CIA agent, but even I could tell that some of these feats were remarkably improbable.

Khatta Meetha highlight: Laugh with Akshay

Indian filmmakers may be struggling to pull a smile with one film after another failing to hit the box office hard. Over a dozen of films have been released over the last couple of months but only a couple of them did well at the theatres. Now, all eyes are on Khatta Meetha, which features Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles.

A mother's love - Peck on the Cheek (Kannathil Muthamittal)

I finally snagged a copy of Kannathil Muthamittal through Netflix and spent a wonderful evening watching an amazing drama unfold. It began with Shyama (a winsome Nandita Das) getting married to Dhileepan in the backwaters of Sri Lanka and then a war took over their romance. Shyama had to flee to India and landed in a refugee camp where she gave birth to a child. Several years later we see Amudha, a playful well-loved child (P. S. Keerthana), who is the darling (or burden) of teachers, parents and fellow schoolmates alike, in a very "How to Solve a Problem Like Maria" (Sound of Music) sequence. On her birthday she is told by her parents Thiru (Madhavan) and Indra (Simran) that she is not their biological child, she was adopted. This tilts her confident love-filled world and she constantly dwells on why her birth mother left her. Several attempts at truancy later the adoptive parents take her to Sri Lanka to try to find her birth mother. The country is torn asunder by a raging civil war and the trio are inevitably caught up in the mess. But this also leads to their meeting the new Shyama - one who finally is confronted by Amudha and asked why she abandoned her daughter.

Angelina Jolie's SALT: reviews

Salt ****

BY ROGER EBERT / July 21, 2010

"Salt" is a damn fine thriller. It does all the things I can't stand in bad movies, and does them in a good one. It's like a rebuke to all the lousy action movie directors who've been banging pots and pans together in our skulls. It winds your clock tight and the alarm doesn't go off for 100 minutes.
It's gloriously absurd. This movie has holes in it big enough to drive the whole movie through. The laws of physics seem to be suspended here the same way as in a Road Runner cartoon. Angelina Jolie runs full speed out into thin air and doesn't look down until she's in the helicopter at the end.

Jolie is one fine-looking woman. You don't need me to tell you that. It's why she gets the big bucks. The movies have celebrated her eyes, lips, profile, biceps, boobs, waist, butt, thighs. “Salt" pays tribute to her ankles. Anyone who can jump from the heights she does here, in the way she does it, may die from a lot of causes, but a sprained ankle won't be one of them.

Why Khatta Meetha will be a hit

Khatta Meetha, latest "blockbuster" of Akshay Kumar to hit theaters on Friday. While everyone is hoping that fate of this "blockbuster" doesn't turn out to be like recent "blockbusters" of King Kumar, here I am, sure that it won't happen, and infact this "blockbuster" might end up becoming a blockbuster. And no, I am not Akshay Kumar, or paid by him for that matter.
